Maria Sabina Picone

Maria was born on September 16, 1928, in Santo Stefano del Sole, Italy where she spent her childhood and formative years. It was in this small Italian village that she would grow up alongside Emilio Picone, a childhood friend who would later become her husband. Maria immigrated to Canada in 1951 and eventually married Emilio in 1952, settling down in Trail, BC where they built a life and family together. They spent the later years of their life together in Victoria, BC enjoying a loving marriage that spanned over 62 years until Emilio's passing in 2015.

Maria was a dedicated homemaker who was an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed hobbies such as crocheting, knitting, sewing and gardening, with gardening being her favourite hobby. She found much happiness tending to her beautiful flower garden and nurturing her flourishing vegetable garden taking great pride in her green thumb. Maria was also a loving and generous Mom and Nonna who took great joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Maria maintained a fierce spirit of independence throughout her life, managing her own affairs and remaining in her own home until her illness took her away at 96 years of age.

She is survived by her children Bruno (Frances), Vita (Art), Antonietta (Rajan) and grandchildren Stefano, Matteo (Rachel), Nancy (Billy), Emily, Devynn, and great grandchildren Peighton, Marco and Elisa.

Being a woman of great faith, Maria left us for home as she heard God's call. Although she will be greatly missed, there is comfort in knowing she is no longer in pain and suffering: 'I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith' (2 Timothy 4:7). She has been reunited with her beloved Emilio, her parents Michele and Assunta, her brothers, Mario and Luigi, and sister, Claudia. Rest in peace Mom, Nonna, Maria, we love you.
