Mike/Mikey passed away in early February. He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years Eva, daughter Tina, stepson Peter Zaoralek (Vicky), grandchildren Brandon, Katelyn & Jocelyn, sister-in-law Diane and niece Dana. He was predeceased by his brother Kerry (2014) and his son Kerry (2025).
Mike was born to Joe and Mabel Kelly and raised in Victoria, attending Bank Street, Margaret Jenkins, Oak Bay Junior and Victoria High Schools. He joined the Saanich Fire Department in 1973 and retired as a Captain after a 30-year career. There were many notable calls during his career including delivering a baby (the parents gave their son the middle name Michael), accompanying a family on an emergency flight to Vancouver after a child’s lawn mower accident, and handling a large structure fire at Camosun College. Early in his career, he received special recognition for assisting an injured driver in an overturned vehicle while off duty; he remained inside the vehicle comforting the driver until emergency services arrived and the extraction was complete.
A highlight of retirement was annual road trips with Eva to the South West, primarily Scottsdale, Arizona, where he enjoyed sun, golf, good food and Coors Light.
Like his mother, Mike loved all animals. He was happiest with a dog in his lap and wildlife in the yard. He documented the visitors — hawks, eagles, owls, mink and many other species —through photography, with truly stunning images. His grand-dog Winston was a favourite buddy.
Along with photography, Mike enjoyed stained glass (in his younger years) like his brother, artist Kerry Joe Kelly, and woodworking like his father Joe, all projects were tackled with care and precision. He enjoyed fishing and golfing (Cedar Hill and Uplands Golf Clubs) and was a devoted Green Bay Packers fan.
Mike was a quiet and introspective man, often more content to sit and take things in, rather than joining the conversation. His love language was service; he was always willing to take on a task or provide a helping hand whenever one was needed. He was kind and caring, as shown in his career choice and his love of family and animals. Those close to him had the pleasure of experiencing his cheeky sense of humour that continued to show itself even in his last months.
In the last several years, Mike had not one but two devastating diagnoses. So lastly, for Mike, take a moment to thank a firefighter. The impact of their work doesn’t end when the call is over. The consequence of what they face for us can affect them long after they’ve left the scene.
In lieu of flowers, donations to an animal charity of your choosing would be truly appreciated.
We love and miss you Mikey/dad.
