Mika - whose name means "beautiful flower" in Japanese - was deeply loved by her mother Midori, father Marc, brother Myles, her family in Japan and Canada, teammates, friends, her beloved dog Haku, and her cherished fur baby, Rocky.
A gifted and passionate athlete, Mika began playing T-ball at age 4 and soccer at age 5. She excelled in both sports, competing in league and provincial tournaments in soccer, and in league, provincial, and national championships in softball. Her teams qualified for the Canadians three times. As a catcher, she was a mighty force behind the plate, rarely letting a ball pass her. Mika earned the respect of teammates and competitors alike for her athleticism, sportsmanship, and unwavering commitment to fair play.
Mika was also a devoted student. She attended public school in French Immersion, graduated with honours, and proudlycompleted the Victoria Japanese Heritage Language School.
She was fluent in both Japanese and French. Even while undergoing cancer treatment, Mika attended the University of Victoria, where she studied intermediate Japanese and earned 95% on her final exam.
Mika, a talented visual artist, created beautiful drawings and paintings, especially portraits of dogs and cats. Recently, she had been taking a watercolour class, delighting in the creativity and warmth of the group. Mika's kindness, maturity, and thoughtfulness touched people of all ages.
Mika's family wishes to thank all who supported her: Dr. McGhie, her oncologist, for his steady hope; the incredible doctors and nurses at Toyama University Hospital in Japan and The Royal Jubilee Hospital Palliative Care and ER for their exceptional care.
Mika faced cancer with extraordinary courage and grace. No matter how difficult the journey, she never gave up. Her strength inspired all who knew her.
Mika, rest in peace. We are with you always.
