Pam was born in Nairobi, Kenya, on October 4th, 1926. She and her younger brother Guy were sent to school in the UK just before the outbreak of the Second World War and did not get back to their parents in Kenya until after the war was over. In 1948, she married Robin Glen in Limuru, Kenya. Seven children followed over the next decade. In 1964, Pam and Robin moved their family from Kenya to Swaziland, where they lived until they emigrated to Canada in 1975. Pam and Robin were the most adventurous parents during those years in Africa, especially in the last few years in Kenya and in all of the years in Swaziland when they took us on long camping adventures “in the bush”. All of us who went on those remarkable trips loved them and they remain vivid in our memories. Pam was always quite clear: she loved her childhood in Kenya, the time spent in the UK during the war, the years in Swaziland and the almost 48 years spent in Canada. She hiked, she cycled and she travelled the world. She painted and played both tennis and bridge very well. She was especially proud to earn her degree at the University of Victoria. She really did make the best of every place she lived and, in particular, she nurtured deep friendships everywhere she went, which she maintained until her death. She had a large extended family whom she loved very much, and who loved her dearly. In the last few years as Pam aged, her friends, many of whom were younger, would remark on the extraordinary life she had lived. And yes, it really was extraordinary. While in Canada, Pam was predeceased by her husband Robin (1989), two of her children, John (2008) and Phil (2019), and by her beloved brother Guy (2005).
She is survived by 5 of her children, Nick, Chris, Kathy, Rose and Dave as we l l as 3 children-in-law, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. She will be missed. But she will always be honoured and the memory of her cherished. Pam’s family would like to acknowledge the outstanding care provided by the Veterans Memorial Lodge at Broadmead in the last few years. If anyone reading this notice would like to make a donation in Pam’s memory, her family suggests that you consider making this to the Lodge at Broadmead.
A celebration of Pam’s life will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023 at 2:00 pm.
Condolences, fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.firstmemorialsaanich.com for the Glen family.
