Pam was predeceased by her parents, Brooke and Eileen Douglass, husband, Victor (2003), and her sister, Wenda Taylor (2017).
Pam was very proud to call Victoria home for her entire life. She attended elementary schools in Saanich and Victoria, graduating from Victoria High School in 1954. During high school, Pam worked part-time at the S.S. Kresge Company department store. After graduation, she worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for two years.
It was at a high school roller skating event that Pam met the love of her life, Victor Shemilt and they married in 1955. Together, they worked at Island Blue Print Co. Ltd. and purchased the company in 1969 from the original founder’s family.
Pam and Vic loved to travel, venturing to many destinations worldwide both personally and through business. Pam was an avid golfer who loved spending time on the course with her ladies’ group. Curling was also her passion whether on the ice, volunteering at bonspiels, or supporting local teams. Pam and Vic enjoyed snow skiing throughout B.C. and were longtime members of the Victoria Aqua Ski Club and Co-op on Shawnigan Lake. Pam loved gardening, reading, knitting, and most importantly spending time with her family and friends.
Pam was known as “The Women Who Never Stops” for her involvement in many Victoria organizations. She was a board member of the Camosun College Foundation. Her generosity reached far and wide, most notably supporting Camosun College students and the Victoria Cancer Agency. Pam was recognized during the 2007 National Philanthropic Day with the Generosity of Spirit Award.
The Shemilt family would like to thank the care staff of Home Instead, the Royal Jubilee Hospital 4th floor nurses and doctors, the Victoria Hospice team, and Dr. Govender for their amazing care provided to Pam during her courageous battle with cancer.
Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, you were amazing in every way. You will be forever in our hearts and missed every day.
A memorial service for Pam will be held at Broad View United Church, 3703 St. Aidans Street, Victoria, B.C. on Friday, July 5, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Victoria Cancer Agency in Pam’s memory.
