Rose Popiel,102, a cherished mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, passed away on March 28, 2026, at Berwick House, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Young, Saskatchewan, she lived a life defined by hard work, resilience, dedication, caring for others, and unwavering love.
At 18, Rose arrived in Vancouver by train and later married Frank Popiel, her “prairie beau.” Together they welcomed and raised two children: Rubin and Darlene. Rose was known for creating a home that welcomed everyone, where friends and family would easily gather. During those times, Rose’s generosity never went unnoticed, as she would often provide hearty meals and much-loved desserts such as pies, cakes, and cookies. Her backyard patio showcased fruit trees, vegetables, flowers and a lush green lawn without a single weed. She had a true green thumb and poured her heart into making it a place where people sat together, shared a cup of tea, relaxed, talked, and laughed while watching the squirrels and listening to the birds.
Throughout her life Rose worked in many roles, among them nannying children, egg candling, and housekeeping. She devoted herself to caring for her family and others and gave back generously to her community, including her extensive dedication through volunteering at Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House.
Rose lived independently in her beloved home until age 101, while being supported by family and friends within her community. She then moved to Victoria to be closer to loved ones and receive additional care.
She is survived by her daughter, Darlene (Bill); granddaughters Sharene (Bruce) and Jennifer; and great grandsons Rio and Keegan. She is predeceased by her husband, Frank, and son, Rubin.
Rose’s legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the community she supported, and the countless lives she touched with her kindness, steadiness, and love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In keeping with Rose’s wishes, no formal service will take place. Those wishing to honour her may consider planting something special in their garden or simply carrying forward her spirit of generosity and care for others.
