With an abundance of love and deep gratitude we announce the peaceful passing of Sohan "Sam" Singh Labh on October 18, 2023. He leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and a lasting impact on the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Sam was born on April 24, 1931 in Victoria, where he lived his entire life. His roots in the city were deep. His father immigrated to Victoria from Punjab, India in 1906, and his mother followed in 1922. He attended Quadra Elementary School, Central Middle School, and proudly graduated from Victoria High School in 1949.
In 1951, Sam married the love of his life, Jogindar, and together they raised four wonderful children.
Sam dedicated the majority of his career to the Forestry industry, working at B.C. Forest Products from 1956 to 1989. He believed strongly in the rights of his fellow workers and undertook a role as a union representative and shop steward.
Sam's commitment to his community extended far beyond the workplace. He generously gave his time to Meals on Wheels, the Gurdwara, and was an active member of the NDP. Sam's humanitarian spirit was exemplified when sponsoring South Asian families immigrating to Canada.
A sports enthusiast, Sam had a special place in his heart for all forms of athletics, not only as a spectator, but also as a player. He founded 'Punjab United F.C.' and was a steadfast supporter of Shamrocks Lacrosse, Vic West F.C., and JBAA Rugby.
Above all, Sam was known for his humility, honesty, and kindness. He celebrated the achievements of his children and grandchildren with pride and joy. His trademark smile welcomed everyone he met and his presence was truly larger than life. Sam saw opportunities in challenges, and maintained an inspiring and positive attitude.
Deeply rooted in Sikhism, Sam had a profound faith that guided his life. He valued and cherished his relationships, ensuring he always checked up on his friends and loved ones, a testament to the genuine care he held for others.
Sam is now reunited with his loved ones who predeceased him: parents Labh Singh and Dhan Kaur; wife Jogindar; son Harish; and siblings Debo, Jindy, and Belle.
Sam's memory lives on in his surviving family members: children Munjeet, Tej (Janet), and Serina; grandchildren Rauvin, Janak (Sandeep), Shauna, Kevin, Lauren, Dylan, Kayle, and Soraya; great grandchildren Jaylum, Nevaeh, and Landon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Walter Chow, Dr. Gaylene Hargrove, and the staff at Community Dialysis for their care and support over many years.
A family-only service and prayers have already taken place. Sam's legacy of love and kindness will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all those who knew him. He will forever be remembered for his indomitable spirit, infectious smile, and genuine love for all.
Rest in peace, dear Sam. You have left an indelible mark on our hearts.
