Charles Ray Schaar, also known as Gramp or Charlie, a lifelong resident of Victoria, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, the 10th of April 2026, at the age of 97. Charles was born on the 14th of September 1928 to Charles and Annie Schenk Schaar. He was predeceased in death by his parents and granddaughter, Madeline (Maddy) Schaar, who shared his enduring love of horses.
Charles’ highest priority and greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife of 74 years Patty Jean Atzenhoffer Schaar; daughters Donna Kuester and husband Scott of Yoakum, Debbie Gregory and husband Ronnie of Victoria; son, Robert “Bobby” Schaar and wife Margaret of Victoria, grandchildren Tyneil McFaddin(Northcott), Charles Scott Gregory (Kayla), Clayton Gregory (Jenni) Katherine Schaar, Thomas Schaar, four great-grandchildren Brea Gregory, Colton Gregory, Lily Gregory, Jordan Gregory and brother Henry Roy Schaar (Mary Frances).
Friends of his were countless. All relished time at the Schaar home, where he cherished entertaining as only he could do. Skeet shooting, riding horses, bird hunting, grilling and drinking a beer or two, were all part of his Texan hospitality shown to anyone and everyone. He had a great love for gardening, cooking, and maintaining a beautiful yard.
Hunting was a lifelong passion from an early age as he, his brother, and Johnny Goldman wandered neighboring pastures looking for game and surely a little mischief along the way. Mounts from South Texas, the Hill Country, and Colorado filled his home with fond memories of times shared with family and friends at hunting camps. He enjoyed many years relaxing at Rockport, was dedicated to cattle and his pride, Doc's Cardinal. Endless hours were spent cultivating his huge vegetable garden, and nothing made him happier than sharing the fruits of his labor with others.
He built a dedicated career at Union Carbide, retiring after 41 years as a Logistics Manager. Traveling abroad and throughout the states allowed him and his wife to meet a multitude of Carbide associates with whom he developed lasting friendships, and they had an unyielding admiration for Charlie.
Charles will be remembered for his faith and devotion to his family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he mentored and shaped and the example he set for all who knew him.
He leaves heartfelt thanks to Dr. Mehran Nezhad for exceptional guidance and care. The family wishes to acknowledge the loyal friendship and care of Irma Ochoa, Angelica Rojas, Martha Ramos, and Amanda Eagles, along with other caregivers over the years whose dedicated support and companionship meant the world to Charles and brought him comfort and joy.
