She was born July 15, 1927 in Casper, Wyoming to Savino and Elena Valdez Jaquez. Her early childhood was spent growing up in the Pump Canyon area of San Juan County. She went to elementary school with the nuns in Blanco, graduating from Aztec High School in 1945. Some of her fondest memories were working summers with a younger sister at “Bruce’s on the Pine” near Vallecito Lake and her big city adventures in Phoenix, Arizona.
Our mother met and fell in love with our Dad, Jenaro “Jim” Marquez in Silverton, Colorado. They married October 17, 1949 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Blanco, New Mexico. When Dad passed away in 1991, they had been married 42 years. She spent most of her early life raising her eleven children and being a homemaker. Later on she worked for Aztec School District as a teacher’s aide and retired from Aztec Senior Center. Mom was a devout Catholic, a member of the Legion of Mary, and active with the St Joseph’s Poor Fund. She was dedicated to the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and its promises. Mother believed with all her heart and meditated daily on the Passion of Christ. She suffered chronic pain many years without complaint.
