Cindy Schmidt passed away peacefully in hospice care on November 5, 2024. She was born Cynthia Camille Roebuck on November 27, 1950 in Center, Texas to Thomas Lee Roebuck and Suanne Moses Roebuck. Thomas worked for Sun Oil Company, and his job took them all over the state of Texas, including Pampa, Midland, and Premont. After her father’s death in 1964, Cindy and Suanne settled in Victoria. Cindy graduated from Victoria High School in 1968 and from Southwest Texas State University in 1972, where she studied English. She began her teaching career at Bloomington High School. She met Thomas Alan Schmidt and they married in 1974.
Cindy and Tom had two boys, David and Michael, and Cindy spent the happiest years of her life raising them in Victoria. When she wasn’t taking them to and from their many activities, she was volunteering across the community. Cindy served in leadership positions or board positions for several community organizations, including Hospice of South Texas, Victoria Adult Literacy Council, Victoria Regional Museum Association, the Victoria Ballet Theatre, and the Victoria Symphony. She served as president of the Junior League of Victoria, the Sandalphon Study Club, Victoria Preservation Inc, and Bronte Club. Cindy also built a career in education, with positions at Victoria High School, Victoria College, and University of Houston-Victoria.
She later found joy in her three grandchildren and in travelling with Tom and her many dear friends. She spent her free time playing Mah Jongg, and pursued genealogy, becoming a member of Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, Daughters of the American Colonists, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Cindy was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, Carl Todd VanWay, and son, Michael Alan Schmidt. She is survived by her husband, her son David Thomas Schmidt (Sara), her three grandchildren Anna Claire Schmidt, Catherine Elizabeth Schmidt, and Charles Thomas Schmidt, and her siblings Carlton Freeman VanWay (Cindy), Joyce Marie VanWay, Todd Alan VanWay (Donna), and Amy VanWay Watts (Jason).
A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 7 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Rosewood Funeral Chapels. The funeral service will take place on Friday, November 8 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Victoria, with the Reverend Ben Sheeran officiating. An interment will follow at Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of South Texas at 605 E. Locust, Victoria, TX, 77901, to Alzheimer’s Association (act.alz.org/donate), or to a charitable organization of the donor’s choice.
