George Garland Daniels, 87, also known to family and friends as Garland, GG, Cap, and most affectionately Pinkie, passed away November 7. He and Ruth, his wife of 67 years, moved to Victoria in 1956 where he spent 44 years rough necking in the oil fields, working his way up the line from Worm to Tool Pusher.
Born in Smiley, his family moved to Stockdale when he was 5. His stories always included his life growing up in Stockdale. One that comes to mind was the time when he was about 8 years old and fell off a wagon load of watermelons. By the time his father stopped the mules pulling the wagon, it had run over young George's abdomen, mashing his little body down into the soft sand to the point of having to be dug out by his dad and brother J.C. He miraculously survived with no injuries or trip to the hospital. By the age of eighteen, George was being called Cap because he was captain of the volleyball team. One day an owner of bucking stock stopped in Stockdale to refuel and began to brag that he had a bull that had never been ridden, even by professional riders in the San Antonio Rodeo. James Dixon, a friend of Cap's, said dryly, “Cap can ride him.” The man took the bull to the local rodeo grounds and childhood friends dotted the fence. Cap crawled on him, and 8 seconds later, he still clung to him. The bull had been ridden for the first time. Pinkie's smiles and stories will be greatly missed. His abilities, agilities, strengths and fun-loving nature led him to be the much loved and respected patriarch of the Daniels family. There was never a country song that he didn't like and he was always the first one to the dance floor!
He is survived by Ruth and Little Pinkie of the home, son, Jimmy of Austin, daughter, Wanda and Colonel Schaefer; granddaughters, Cortney Daniels, Michelle and Shannon Martin, Trisha and Eddie Grahmann; and grandson, Chad and Amber Schaefer, all of Victoria. He was great grandfather of Colter and Jade Davis, Samantha Martin, of Galveston, and Weston Martin, of Victoria, Sabastian Kucera, Makenna and Rylee Schaefer, all of Victoria, and Lauren and Thomas McDowell of Ft. Hood. He was also great-great grandfather of Konzen McDowell. Pinkie is also survived by his sister, Ada May Williams of Victoria; sister, Maridee and Square Lambeck; and brother, Steve Daniels, of Seguin. He was preceded in death by daughter, Linda, and brothers, J.C. and Slim, father, Clifton and mother, Betty (Watkins) of Stockdale. A Special Thanks goes to Helen Ibarra for her Time and Compassion sitting with Pinkie.
Graveside Services will be held Tuesday, November 10, 2015, 10:30 a.m. at the Stockdale City Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s’ Association.
