

Guthrie Johnnie Sklar, 86, of Placedo, Texas passed away at home Sunday, March 25, 2012. He was born October 11, 1925 in Moravia, Texas, to the late Charles and Frances (Fojt) Sklar. He was a resident of Placedo since 1926. He was married for 63 years to Margie (Cervenka) Sklar.
Guthrie is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Evelyn, Dorothy and Ira, and his son, Bill.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Margie (Cervenka); daughter, Debbie King (David); son, Charles (Nancy); grandson, Charles Jr;, three step-grandchildren, Ryan, Jenna, and Aaron; six step-great grandchildren; brother, Allan Sklar and numerous nieces and nephews.
Guthrie was a graduate of Bloomington High School and Victoria Junior College. He was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.
He entered the Army in 1944 and served on the front lines with General Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the 376th Infantry Regiment. He earned numerous ribbons, four Battle Stars, a Purple Heart, and a Combat Infantry Badge. He was a lifetime member of the VFW #4146 lodge.
Guthrie farmed and ranched all of his life. He served as president of the Victoria County Farm Bureau and was awarded the Victoria County Farm Bureau Pioneer Award in 2010, Director of the Victoria District Soil Conservation, president of the Bloomington Co-op Gin and Director of the Victoria County Drainage District #2. Guthrie also served as County Commissioner of Precinct One and was Superintendent of Steers for the Victoria County Livestock Show for 33 years. Guthrie also was a member of the Board of Trustees for the Bloomington Independent School District for 27 1/2 years.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, March 28, 2012, from 6-8 p.m at Rosewood Funeral Chapels.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Rosewood Funeral Chapels with Rev. David King officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors under the auspices of the Victoria Veterans Council.
Pallbearers will be George Cervenka, Otto Cervenka, Harold Frank, Darrell Sklar, I. C. Sklar, Al Sklar, Sonny Rigsby, Lonnie Varner and Felix Vasquez.
Honorary pallbearers are Donovan White and Suzanne Wesson
