A multi-generational “born on the island” native, Larry was born in Galveston, Texas to Earl Blackwell and Margaret Young (nee Wichlep) on October 25, 1931. After graduating from Ball High School in Galveston in 1949 as a multiple-sport letterman and president of the Student Congress, he attended the St. Mary’s Seminary in La Porte Texas before leaving to play football at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville Texas. After an injury ended his football career, Larry transferred to North Texas State University where he graduated with a degree in business communications in 1956.
Larry was working at U.S. Rubber Company, now Uniroyal, selling industrial rainwear to Gulf shrimpers when he met Florence Vivian “Fluff” Tibiletti of Victoria in Corpus Christi where she was teaching school. They were married on June 6, 1959 in Victoria, followed by a reception at the historic Denver Hotel. Soon after their daughter Felicia was born in 1962 in Corpus Christi, they moved to Port Arthur, followed by Houston. They then settled in Dallas where they lived for 32 years before moving back to Victoria in 2000.
After a successful career in the insurance industry, Larry retired in 1988. An avid athlete throughout his life, Larry enjoyed golf, tennis, long distance cycling, and more. In his later years, he especially enjoyed the company of his grandchildren and great grandchild. He was also a volunteer at the Victoria Public Library and Citizen’s Hospital.
