Roy was born, the oldest of four children, to Roy David and Edith Rebecca Nichols on August 25, 1929.
He is survived by his wife, Doris E. Nichols of Apple Valley, his son and daughter-in-law, Sean and Nikole Nichols of Sparks, Nevada, a sister, Ruth Johnson of Davis, California, a brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Marian Nichols of Rocky Ford, Colorado, their families and many friends.
Roy grew up on a farm in Colorado, attended Rocky Ford High School, and graduated from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. Following a tour of duty in U.S. Air Force, he entered public school education and earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He spent thirty-nine years as an educator in Colorado and California. Following his retirement from public education, he became a story teller for the San Bernardino County Library serving the Victorville Public Library until his retirement in 1994.
In addition, Roy sometimes filled the pulpit of churches of Christ and served as a Bible class teacher. He was a life member of the National Education Association and California Teachers Association. Roy enjoyed public speaking, storytelling and creative writing. He was a member of Toastmasters International where he served as area governor and earned the designation, “Distinguished Toastmaster”.
Roy and his wife, Doris, have written several children’s books. Roy’s articles and stories often appeared in the Mature Living magazine. He leaves behind a legacy of storytelling, poetry, and a great many afghans he created to keep himself busy.
