Virginia Beach - Barbara Jean Smith (Garner), 75, longtime resident of Virginia Beach, VA born March 28, 1938 in Richmond, VA left this world to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 8:30 AM on Monday, February 17, 2014 in Elizabeth City, NC. She fought a courageous, long and hard fight with cancer and never gave up. She was always full of faith, hope and love. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Elson Guy Smith, Jr, and four of her children, Elson III, Ronald, Kenneth & Sherry. She was predeceased by her second child, Cathy shortly after childbirth. She is also survived by all of her grandchildren, Michelle, Stephanie, Krystal, Devin, Nathan and Isaiah as well as her great-grandchildren, Bella, Weston and Savannah. She was predeceased by her mother and father and by her aunt & uncle who raised her, Helen (Bigger) and Bill McPherson of Richmond, VA. She loved her family with all of her heart and was loved by them all. She was a very special woman who loved life and people. In the 60's she was involved in Child Evangelism Fellowship as well as children's church work and Sunday School bus work with her husband. In the 70's she went to Japan as a missionary along with her husband and children and helped to establish Churches and to spread the gospel to the Japanese people in the Greater Tokyo Area. She also worked capably and successfully with her husband over many decades to establish and build Guy Smith Heating & Air Conditioning in the Hampton Roads area. She loved her horses, her cat and her dog. She was gifted at flower arranging as well as business and accounting and enjoyed having and taking care of horses.
