Conway Ellis Herriott Sr.

Conway Ellis Herriott, Sr., affectionately known as "Sonny" or "Coach Sonny," passed away peacefully on April 10, 2026, in Virginia Beach, VA, at the age of 80. Born on March 26, 1946, in Roanoke, VA, Sonny lived a life full of dedication, service, and love for his family and community.

Sonny's journey through life was marked by varied and honorable service. He was employed with Southern Railroad and proudly served his country in both the United States Army and Navy. Beyond his professional endeavors, Sonny was devoted to cultivating a love for sports among those around him. His passion for track, semi-pro baseball, basketball, and football was infectious, and he shared this enthusiasm through coaching various sports, including basketball, T-Ball, baseball, football, and even bowling. Through these roles, he impacted countless lives and was fondly regarded as "Coach Sonny" by many.

A man of faith, Sonny was a dedicated member of Freedom Fellowship Church, finding strength and solace within his community there. His commitment to his family was paramount, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

Sonny was preceded in death by his first adopted parents, Leroy and Grace Ellis; his second adopted parents, Robert Herriott and Doris Ellis; his brother, Gregory Herriott; and his cousin, Tyrone Nelson.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Tyrane "Britt" Herriott, who was his steadfast companion and the love of his life. Sonny leaves behind a large and loving family, including his children: Crystal Herriott, Constance Herriott, Conway Herriott, Jr., Tiffany McCoy, Marcus McPherson, Brittanie Herriott, and Andre Herriott. He is also survived by father in-law Billy Carswell, former wife Kathleen Herriott, his brother, William Herriott, along with 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 11 Godchildren, life-long friends, numerous extended family members and friends to include his beloved pets who will ALL remember him fondly for his warmth, humor, and kindness.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 8:00 pm, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Freedom Fellowship Church, 836 Regency Dr, Virginia Beach, VA 23454. The Committal Service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Rd, Suffolk, VA 23434.

Sonny's legacy will continue through the innumerable lives he touched with his wisdom, guidance, and love. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him and were loved by him.
