Douglas Martin Moreland

His battle with a serious medical issue in recent years showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Doug came out a hero and stayed strong until the end.

Doug enlisted into the United States Navy September 2, 1986, on a 6 year commitment to obtain electronics training, which turned into an impactful 30 year career where he retired as a Lieutenant Commander in October 2016. During his enlistment, Doug served on 7 different U.S. Navy ships and was awarded numerous medals, awards, and ribbons.

Doug met the love of his life, Melanie, while doing some work for her father Wayne Shadden in Helena, Arkansas. For him It was love at first sight, and she has supported him, his Navy career, and his post retirement life every step of the way. Together, they had two children: Kayla and Karlee.

Doug was a devoted husband and father. You could often find him ‘piddling’ in the garage or looking for new projects around the house to keep him busy. Doug always had an infectious smile and an open heart that was always willing to help a friend or stranger in need. He enjoyed the occasional cold beverage, listening to country music, cooking bar-b-que, being out on the water, conversing with friends, Arkansas football ‘Woo Pig Sooie’, and being with family. He was most proud of his daughter Kayla, his family, and the time he spent serving his country.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Donald William Moreland and Molly Annette Catlett Moreland, daughter Karlee Ann Moreland. Doug is survived by his wife, Melanie Shadden Moreland; two daughters, Kayla (Jose) Moreland Ramos, Lynsay (Dave) Macias; four grandchildren, Jayden, Aven, Atlen, and Jaxson; one sister, Regina (Richard) Ann Moreland Karnes; one brother, Sonny (Rose) William Moreland Jr; one mother-in-law, Vivian ‘Nanny’ Shadden, and many many friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 3pm on Aug. 13th at 108 E Point Estates Ct, Knotts Island, NC 27950.
