Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Stoy, 89, a lifelong resident of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away in her home on October 20, 2025. She was born on March 31, 1936, to William O. and Maybelle Miller Godfrey.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dale E. Stoy, and their son, Dale E. Stoy, Jr.
Betty attended Oceana High School and in her young adult years spent many volunteer hours at her children’s school and sporting events. Once her children were all of school age, she spent many years working as a valued member of “Doc” Conkwright’s medical practice. Throughout her life, she willingly shared her sage advice, comfort, and resources to those who needed it.
A talented seamstress, Betty created countless handmade costumes, clothing, and home goods for her family and friends. Her creativity knew no bounds. She approached each new hobby with enthusiasm, from knitting and crafts to nature walks, book discussions, funny emails, and jigsaw puzzles.
Betty had a vibrant personality and a unique bond with each person in her life. She held a different key to each loved one’s heart. She will be remembered for her sharp wit, sense of humor, and lively conversation.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Mary Strickland (Ray), Linda Burket (Joe), Rick Stoy (Carol), and Jim Stoy (Patty); along with their extended families including many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, October 26, from 2:00–4:00 PM at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. A graveside service will follow on Monday, October 27, at 11:00 AM at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery, 2020 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23454.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
