George W. McCormic, Sr, 90, of Virginia Beach, passed away on August 26, 2024. He was born on September 15, 1933, in Abilene, Kansas, to Marjorie Wilma Rasher and Floyd Aaron McCormic, who preceded in him death. His older sister, Donna, also preceded him in death; and just thirteen months ago, his beloved wife, Carol, preceded him.
Growing up in Kansas, he graduated from Abilene High School in 1951. That is when he decided to join the US Navy.
George served our country for twenty-two years from September 25, 1951, to November 30, 1973. During his years of service, he served aboard the USS Iowa (BB-61), USS Randolph (CVS-15), USS Lawrence (DDG-4), and the USS Independence (CV-62). George served during three wars: the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War. During the Vietnam War, George oversaw twenty gunboats for a year. George also spent time serving shore duty. One of his duties was as Instructor Chief Master at Arms in Great Lakes, Illinois. He also taught ACNR School at Naval Station Norfolk.
Just three years after joining the Navy, he met his future wife, Carol Ann McGowan. Having four children, Carol and George were blessed to be married for sixty-eight years.
After he retired from the Navy, he went to work at QED Systems, Inc. where his accomplishments were innumerable. Throughout his fifty years with QED, he traveled extensively for the company.
George served as a Boy Scout Troop Leader for several years. He served various positions through the years in the churches he attended. Whether it was as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, elder, singer, or actor. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor.
He brought his family up in a Christian home and taught his children Christian values.
Those left to honor and love his memories are Angeleck (David) Nance of Norfolk, VA, George William, Jr. (Mary) McCormic of Virginia Beach, VA, Connie (Mike) Yelton of Chesapeake, VA, and Lisa (Todd) McIntire of Rudd, IA; six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
