Janet Bryan Hughes

Our dear mother, Janet Bryan Hughes, 85, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Tuesday, September 8, 2020. She was born August 20, 1935, in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Elnora and Clarence Bryan. Janet was a devoted loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and most importantly a servant of Christ. She taught a young adult Sunday School class in the 80s and 90s at Knotts Island Baptist Church. She later attended Great Bridge Free Will Baptist Church until her health required her to attend church closer to home. She enjoyed seeing friends while attending Oak Grove Baptist Church. She worked as a dental assistant for 30 years until she became an independent contractor for the United States Postal Service delivering mail on Knotts Island. She spent over 20 years delivering mail. Janet was always happy with an infectious laugh and a radiant smile that lit up the room. She loved her family, bowling, and spending time, mostly talking and laughing, with friends and family. She left a ton of great memories that her family will hold dear to their hearts and cherish forever. Her family takes comfort knowing that one day there will be a reunion in heaven. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by an infant daughter, and sisters, Elnora Anderson and Joy Longworth. She is survived by her children, Dale Hughes (Martha), David Hughes (Diane), Craig Hughes (Angie), Matthew Hughes (Serena), Jamie Kepko (Scott); and their father, Melvin Hughes; grandchildren, Sara, Sheena, Heather, Holly, Hunter, Reba, Zach, Rachel, Wyatt, Tristin, Faith, and Madison; 12 great grandchildren; her sister, Shirley Peele (Larry); brothers, Stanley Bryan and Eugene Bryan (Doris); and numerous nieces and nephews. A sincere and heartfelt thank you to Diane Hobbs for being Mom’s primary personal caregiver during her battle with breast cancer. There will be a gathering of family and friends Sunday, September 13, 2020 4–6pm at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach. Services will be held Monday, September 14, 2020 at 10 am at Fellowship Baptist Church, 871 Tulls Creek Road, Moyock, NC with Reverend Hal Jones III officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park, 601 N Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. Family and friends will gather after the burial at her sons Dale’s house, 6408 Knotts Island Road, Virginia Beach, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family asks gifts be given to your local church or other Christ based ministry to help spread the love and gospel of Jesus Christ.
