Janice Petrea Young went to His light on August 18, 2023 in the home of her daughter H. Kimberlie Young of Virginia Beach, Virginia, two months shy of her 83rd birthday. In her last days, she was surrounded by her other daughters, J. Kellie Evans (Laymon Evans) of Gates, North Carolina; Jamie R. Young of Virginia Beach, Virginia, R. Jill Stancil (Kenny Stancil) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; all of her grandchildren; her sister, dawn Hochberg (Robert Tacha) of Norfolk, Virginia; her precious Lola, who lay next to her until her last breath, and a host of other dear friends. Her love lives on in her four grandchildren, Willow dawn Evans, and Chloe Rose Evans, both of Gates, North Carolina; Reese, Anthony Young, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Luke Owen Young of Virginia Beach, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late James Farrell and Johnnie Lewis Petrea of Rocky Point, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Hugh Petrea. Her life included friendships that stood the test of time. She cherished Toya Burke of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Nancy Infantino of Port St. Lucie, Florida. Jan, as she was known, persevered a rare cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma, for seven years until it took away her ability to live and love as she wanted. As a single mom, she put herself through nursing school and raised her four daughters on a nurses salary. She instilled the importance of education and always being independent. She prided herself on her daughters’ and grandchildren‘s accomplishments, and was always the loudest grandparent/parent in the stands. She loved the ocean, traveling the world, and her rescue yorkie, Lola. She was a foodie and enjoyed every bite until the end. A crossword puzzle junkie and crime show fan, she had a knack for recycling and couponing, always looking for a deal. After earning a B.S. in nursing from Old Dominion University, she started her career at Leigh Memorial Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia when they first opened their doors. She retired from Leigh and went on to work for Virginia Beach City Jail and Patient First as an RN. A natural redhead, her sarcastic wit and ‘tell it like it is” attitude was reflected in her spitfire nature. She had a soft spot though. Independent until the end, she lived alone with the support of her neighbors, who were her angels. We thank Melanie, Mike, Ashley, Tyreek, and Amari for loving our mom. In lieu of flowers, consider donations to the Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research Foundation at accrf.org in her honor. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
