John proudly served his country, retiring from the United States Navy after 30 years of honorable service. Following his naval career, he continued to contribute to his community as a driver for Hall Automotive, where his reliability and friendly demeanor were cherished by colleagues and customers alike.
A man of many passions, John was known for his hardworking nature and his zest for travel. He delighted in exploring new places and meeting new people, always eager to discover what the world had to offer. His love for music was evident in his fondness for singing karaoke, particularly old songs that brought joy to those around him. John also enjoyed dancing, often seen moving gracefully to the rhythm of the music he adored.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Harkless and Annie Grace Harkless; stepfather Joseph Jones; brother Anthony Boyd; sisters Charlotte Reed, Elizabeth Harkless, Mildred Allen; brother-in-law James Allen; nephew James Brown Jr.; and niece Cheryl McDonald. He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 32 years Cita Harkless, his son John Harkless Jr., stepson Ricardo Otto; Daughters Lori Anderson (Lovell), Shannon Pendleton, and Kista Thurmon (Mark). He is also survived by his brother William Boyd (LaDonna), and sisters Corine Cooley. (C.L.), Mary Ann Boykin(Vernell Sr.) Lee Katherine Boyd, Sister-in-law Renee’ Boyd a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Lawrence Anderson, Milton Davis, Mason Thurmon, and Diamond Alexis Harkless, as well as his great-grandchildren, Lenox, Lawrence, and Laken Anderson, who brought immense joy to his later years.
A visitation for John will be held Saturday, April 26, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Smith & Williams Funeral Home/Kempsville, 4889 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462. A funeral service will occur Sunday, April 27, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Smith & Williams Funeral Home/Kempsville.
John Westley Harkless will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his adventurous spirit, and his ability to bring laughter and music into the lives of those he touched. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
