Clysta Jewell (George) Sims, born Christmas Day 1935 in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, went to meet her Savior on January 6, 2021 in Fresno, California. Jewell moved to California with her family at an early age, living in the Los Angeles area before coming to the Central Valley where she graduated from Woodlake High School in 1952.
Jewell worked as a bookkeeper in the area for over 40 years. Her favorite job was working for Mr. Snowdon at Snowdon Elementary School in Farmersville.
Jewell married Leroy Sims in 1953 and they eventually settled in Visalia where they raised their family and retired.
Jewell’s medical difficulties began in 2008, eventually requiring more consistent medical care and attention. For the past five and a half years, she lived at NorthPoint Heath Care facility in Fresno to be near her son and daughter-in-law. Prior to COVID restrictions, she enjoyed getting to spend time with the family for holidays and other special occasions at her son’s house and attending special events at church with them. While at NorthPoint, Jewell served as President of the Residents’ Council. Before COVID restrictions prohibited indoor activities, Jewell loved participating in Bingo, special music, and church services offered at NorthPoint. She enjoyed listening to her favorite pastors and Christian music on TV and could often be found reading her Bible or a favorite book. She made many friends at NorthPoint, including both residents and staff. Jewell’s family would like to thank the staff at NorthPoint, especially Activities staff -- Desiree, Rachel, and Alex -- who loved her and were at her side during her final days.
Jewell was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Sarah George; her birth mother, Mary Horn; her husband of nearly 58 years, Leroy; her son, Larry; and two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her son Vernon (Nancy) Sims, grandson Geoffrey (Danae) Sims, granddaughter Whitney (Kenny) Anderson, sister Juanita Keel, as well as two step granddaughters and a number of nieces and nephews. She was “Mama Jewell” to several great grandchildren.
