Delwin (Del) Wood received his heavenly reward on February 7, 2014 at the age of 76 yrs. He was born on October 20th, 1937 in Woodlake, CA to Reverend Morris & Zola Wood. He was the 10th of eleven children.
He is survived by his daughter, Jill Roberson (Russ) of Visalia and two grandsons, Matt Roberson of Visalia & Jacob Roberson of Clovis, 3 brothers, Paul (Lois) Wood of Sacramento, Loyd Wood of Visalia and John Wood of Woodlake. Also, Don & Billie Brooke of Mansfield, MO, his in-laws he was very close to. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Barbara in 1994, his parents Morris & Zola and siblings; Joe, Charles, David, Don (Bud), Irene, Mary and Maurice. We can only imagine the reunion that was had as Del was reunited with them all!
Del was raised primarily in Woodlake and other small cities in the Central Valley. He graduated from Woodlake High in 1955 & attended Fresno State. He met the love of his life & best friend, Barbara Varvil, as a teenager in Woodlake and they were married in 1957. He worked alongside his brothers, John & Bud in their family business, Wood Brothers Construction.
In 1962 Del was drated into the Army & was stationed in Germany. He & Barb made their home there for 16 months during which time he quickly moved up the ranks to Sergeant. After he served, they returned to Woodlake where they made their home.
In 1967 Del received an opportunity to become the assistant manager at Diamond Lumber, and so he, Barb & their 3 yr. old daughter, Jill, moved to Woodland, CA and within 10 months he was asked to become the manager at the Diamond Lumber in Auburn, CA. He accepted and they lived there for 18 yrs during which time they attended Auburn First Assembly of God Church. There, Del served on the church board, taught a Young Married’s Class, a boys class ‘Royal Rangers’, and was part of the choir & a men’s quartet. He also was a member of the Gideons International Association for several years.
In 1986 they moved back to the Central Valley and settled in Visalia where Del went back to work with his brother John at Wood Brothers Construction and remained there until retiring in 2001.
Del was currently a member of Visalia First Assembly & was very involved until health issues caused him to step out of some ministries. He served on the church board, missions board, was a small groups leader and served as usher captain.
Del touched many lives with his friendly, open and kind demeanor. He was a true example of a Christ Follower. He was also well known for his humor and funny, sometimes corny, jokes! He was a loyal friend to many and an amazing husband, father & papaw. He was an active participant in his grandsons lives and cherished them. As his daughter, I can truly say I was blessed beyond measure to have had him as my dad. He will be missed more than words can say, but I know this separation is only temporary. I can rest in the assurance that he is with the Savior, whom he served so faithfully, Jesus Christ, & is once again with his beloved wife, my mom as well as so many family & friends who have gone ahead of him. So long for now my sweet dad & friend!
