Josephine “Josie” Torres, loving wife, devoted mother and caring Nana was called home to be with her eternal Father on April 24, 2026 peacefully at her home with her family by her side. Josie was born on November 26, 1930; she was one of seven siblings who grew up in Outside Creek an area outside of Farmersville before moving to Visalia at the start of high school. Josie graduated from Visalia High School and soon after she met Frank Torres. The two married on December 10, 1949 and celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary before Frank’s passing in 2020.
In the spring of 1951, she started the greatest role of her life – motherhood. She was the rock of her family from that point on and loved being a mom. Her sons lovingly remember how they would have friends over for sleepovers growing up and their friends would specifically ask if their mom could make the little pancakes for breakfast – which were her homemade flour tortillas that she would top with melted butter and cinnamon. She would annually open their home to extended family and set up assembly lines that put everyone to work in helping to make all of the homemade tamales they would later share at Christmas Eve with family and friends. She was an active member of the St. Mary’s church and could often be seen at the 12 pm weekday mass. She traveled with friends from church to the Vatican, India, Singapore, the Holy Land and Medjugorje and enjoyed those trips that strengthened her faith. Her and Frank also enjoyed traveling together and made countless trips to Mexico with their friends either from the Breakfast Lions Club or American Legion Post #785.
Josie had a unique way of adding humor into any and every situation. She loved being the life of the party and was often the leading light of every room she entered. At any wedding or party she could often be found in the middle of the dance floor enjoying the company of any willing partner to spin her around. When grandkids arrived she relished her role as Nana. She was always there to support them in school activities, sporting events and loved spoiling them any way she could. In true Josie form, she had the last laugh when her son came across her burial wishes and “Adios Amigos” was written on the outside of the envelope.
Josie is preceded in death by her husband Frank, son Jerry P. Torres and her brothers Nacho, George, Roy and Gilbert and sister Carmen.
She is survived by her sons Mike (Vickie), Greg (Janice), Gerald (Tracie) Torres and daughter Lisa (Brian) Harris; six grandchildren – Jenny (Kris) Morgan, Grant Torres, Jeremy (Chestine) Torres, Brandon (Destiny) Harris, Brianna Blaylock and Jamie Harris along with fifteen great-grandchildren – Dominic, Athena and Nicholas Torres, Kai & Lyric Harris, Saegyn & Remington Blaylock, Everly & Lily Torres, Oliver & Owen Morgan and Elias, Quentyn, Theo and Xadyn Harris.
A mass to celebrate the beautiful life of Josie will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Friday June 12th at 9:30 am.
