

Newell Herum was born May 1, 1924 to Haldor and Aida Herum in Maple Plains, MN. He graduated from Mound High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines and New Guinea. He married Inez Baker in 1946. After her death he married Rosanna Rittmueller in 2000.
In 1946 Newell enrolled at the University of MN majoring in Industrial Education and graduated with a bachelor’s degree. He later earned his master’s degree in Educational Administration from Fresno State University. Newell and Inez moved to Pixley, CA in 1949 where he started his teaching career and where his children, Kathy and David, were born. In 1952 they moved to Porterville where he was Principal of Burton School and in 1954 he became Principal of Wilson School in Exeter and became Superintendent of Exeter Elementary Schools in 1955, serving in that capacity for 7 years.
Newell moved to Visalia in 1962 and served as Assistant Superintendent of Visalia Unified School District until his retirement in 1984. In 2011 he moved to Bethel Lutheran Home in Selma.
In Visalia he served as president of Christ Lutheran Church Council, Lt. Gov. of Division 18 of Kiwanis, president of Tulare County Elementary Administrators, on the boards of the Salvation Army, Mt. Whitney Council of Boy Scouts, president of Phi Delta Kappa and was a lifetime member of P.T.A. His hobbies included woodworking, traveling and reading.
Newell is survived by his wife, Rose; daughter, Kathy Grudin; son, David Herum; granddaughter, Krista Garver; sister, Audrey; brother, DeLoie; stepchildren, Wayne and Daniel Bromley and Virginia Joyce; and 5 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Miller Memorial Chapel, 1120 W. Goshen Ave, Visalia. Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 10:00 am at Christ Lutheran Church, 3830 W Tulare Ave, Visalia.
