Remaining in his absence are his wife of 55 years, Della Brown; three daughters, CheyAnne Brown, Taylor Brown, Raemee Anderson and granddaughter, Kennedy Anderson.
Born on August 18, 1944, of humble beginnings in Colgate Oklahoma, Dewayne created a fulfilling and memorable life. He lived his version of the American Dream, finding the love of his life, getting married and buying land. He farmed his land. He built a home on his land. He raised a family on his land. And he died on his land.
On that land he grew gardens every summer that were entirely too big and enjoyed sharing the bounty with family, friends and neighbors. He filled his table with the food that he grew, enjoying things like the simplicity of a freshly sliced tomato. We have many fond memories of helping in the gardens picking okra, squash, eggplant, cucumbers and tomatoes. Staking and stringing tomato plants was a family activity and Dewayne loved to torture us with tomato worms. We all have a tomato worm story.
Dewayne served our country in Vietnam and wrote to Della faithfully while he was away. He wrote to her about how she had captivated his heart. He wrote to her about the life he wanted to create with her, the family he wanted to have, the things he wanted to provide her with, and then he made those things reality. He was a thoughtful and loving husband, always remembering their wedding anniversary with flowers and a card keeping their love alive.
A well known face at UPS, Dewayne worked there for 49 years. He was an icon and everyone there knew who Phoenix Dewayne Brown was. We were a UPS family and the humor of “What can Brown do for you?” was not lost on a family with the last name Brown.
Those who knew Dewayne know he was a captivating narrator. He was masterful at telling a good story and he enjoyed telling them. Many of those have become family memories that are relived over and over, making us laugh and smile. We will continue to keep those moments and memories alive in his absence.
Hard work and integrity were both cornerstones of Dewayne’s life. He taught his daughters to be strong and know the value of putting in the work necessary to get a job done well. He instilled character and good values in them and was always there to guide and support them. He was proud of them and their accomplishments. He told them often that he loved them.
Dewayne was known and loved by many, and will be remembered and missed by many. We invite you to join us in celebrating his life and legacy. Please see the information below.
