

Herman McCoy Booth was born in New Holland, SC on May 18, 1924 to the late Alvie Wilson and late Emma Dell (Hydrick) Booth and passed away on Tuesday, March 9, 2021. He graduated from Wagener High School, and then entered the U.S. Army where he proudly served in World War II, in the European Theatre, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a lifelong Mason and Jamil Shriner.
He married Sybil Judith Hartzog on June 13, 1944. Together they had two daughters, Judith Dell and Amy Michelle who married and provided Herman with the sons he loved as his own: Clarence Newton Jeffcoat and Glenn Elton Robinson.
Herman was predeceased by his wife, Sybil; his daughter, Dell; his son, Newton. Herman was predeceased by his sisters, Alyne Gunter, Alma Moss, Louise Taylor and Betty Clonts. He was also predeceased by his wife, Ouida Booth.
Herman is survived by his daughter, Amy and her husband, Glenn; his granddaughters, Tammy (Mike) Lenhart, Melissa Byrd and Emily (Adam) Barringer. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Jaclyn, Christopher and Eric Byrd, Renessa Montcalm and Kacee Byram. He is also blessed to have three great-great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Evan and Amy.
After leaving the Army, Herman began a career with the Charleston Post and Courier newspaper. He later moved to Columbia where he worked for The State paper. After retiring from The State paper, he stayed busy with a myriad of jobs. He moved mobile homes, opened his own mobile home park, opened Booth’s Used Cars and loved going to auctions.
Those who knew Herman will remember his love of NASCAR, cars, his family and his pets. He loved going to NASCAR races. Herman attended the very first races at the Daytona International Speedway, the Darlington Raceway the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the Talladega Superspeedway and the Rockingham track. He was able to attend many races during his lifetime, including spending many years at the local dirt tracks. From his very early years, Herman loved cars and would talk about cars with anyone.
Herman was blessed to have a special friend and business partner, Ralph Padgett. They have enjoyed many adventures together throughout the years.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel with interment to follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. A reception will follow the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Shandon-Wood Animal Clinic “Giving Back” Fund, 912 Daly St., Columbia, SC 29205 as Herman loved helping animals.
