He is survived by his sons, Johnny (Barbara) of Irmo, Mike of West Columbia, JD (Claire) of Hixson, TN and Jimmy (Brenda) of Leesville; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by parents, Olin Danclor Kyzer, Sr. and Mamie Ethel Crout Kyzer and wife, Betty June Watson Kyzer.
Hollie was the youngest of 10 children and grew up farming on his family land. He met his wife, Betty, the love of his life, and together they raised four boys and taught them integrity, loyalty, and compassion. Hollie loved his boys unconditionally and was so proud of all of them and their personal achievements.
Hollie proudly owned and operated his own trucking company, which in later years provided some of the most interesting, and often funny, stories of his adventures around the United States. He enjoyed the Atlanta Falcons, NASCAR, fishing, gardening, riding his golf cart and his farm animals. He got so much pleasure sitting on his back porch watching his goats and donkeys.
His recent hobbies included joking with the nurses and staff at Saluda Nursing Home. He had an amazing sense of humor, a beautiful smile and contagious laugh. He was a good storyteller. He would tell you his most loyal companion growing up was his horse, Maude. They plowed the fields and together had many journeys through the countryside. His favorite story to tell was when he rode Maude to the local convenience store and while inside, Maude, apparently missing him, decided to come inside the store to find him. The clerk thought it was funny but also insisted the horse leave immediately.
Hollie served on a destroyer in the Navy and luckily never saw wartime, but loved to joke with his grandchildren and make up all sorts of war stories. In later years, Hollie lived on family land next to his brother OD and wife Myrtice. He humbly cared for them both and after OD’s death, continued to care for Myrtice for many years while she resided in a nursing home.
Hollie cherished his family and the times when they gathered, especially for holidays. Not a church going person, he ritually would get dressed up every Sunday morning, watch service on TV and then get Sunday dinner afterwards. He believed that Sunday was a day of rest.
Special thanks to the nurses and staff at Saluda Nursing Center for their great care and friendship with Hollie.
