Melanie Bloom, daughter of Thelma and Guy Mitchell, was born on June 27, 1961. She grew up in Cayce, SC and graduated from Brooklyn-Cayce High School in 1979. She was the youngest of three sisters (Linda and Debra). After graduating high school, Melanie was hired by the SC Department of Transportation as an office manager in the equipment depot. Her co-workers gave her the nickname "Paper Lady". This was where Melanie met her first husband Tommy Jackson. Together they had two children, Lyndsay and Cameron, and a lovable Dalmatian named Perdy. The Jackson family built a house in West Columbia. Sadly, Tommy unexpectedly died in 2001.
Melanie touched everyone's life with her quiet but positive personality. She had many friends. She was impossible not to like. No one ever had an unkind word to say about her. Melanie was promoted to Office Manager in the Highway Safety Office. It was there where she met William Bloom, when he was hired by the same office. As the office personnel manager, Melanie saw on William's paperwork that he had her same birthday. Eventually, they began dating. Melanie and William married in July 2004. Together with William's three children (Kristin, Kevin and Melissa) the blended family of 7 moved to Lexington.
Melanie became "Mimi" when her first grandchild, Zane, was born in 2010. Elaine followed in 2011, Patton 2013, Whitley 2015, Chase 2016, Colton 2017 and finally Ellia in 2018. Melanie added an additional family member in 2010 with the adoption of the sweetest Cockapoo, Chance.
Melanie was an avid scrapbooker and card maker. She watched hours of YouTube videos to learn the skills needed to become an expert. Melanie also loved traveling around the state and sometimes out of state, spending hours in various antique stores, estate sales and yard sales. Outside of family time, antiquing was her biggest passion.
Melanie was pre-deceased by her parents Thelma and Guy, sisters Linda and Debra and special niece Angela. She is survived by her husband William, children Lyndsay (Matt), Cameron, stepchildren Kristin (Taylor), Kevin and Melissa. Grandchildren Zane, Elaine, Patton, Whitley, Chase, Colton, and Ellia along with many nieces and nephews and of course Chance. Melanie will be greatly missed by all that she left behind. She was truly a very special person.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 10, 2025 at 2:00 pm, with visitation 1 hour prior at Caughman Harman Funeral Home - West Columbia Chapel. Interment will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens.
