

With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Roy Alvin Mclaughlin Jr., “Butch” a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Butch departed this life peacefully on October 15, 2024, in West Columbia, SC, at the age of 60. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and spirited conversations.
Born on August 30, 1964, in Columbia, SC, Butch was the beloved son of Roy Mclaughlin and Delores Cottrell. From an early age, Butch exhibited a passion for life and a unique charisma that drew people to him. He spent his childhood in Columbia, nurturing a love for SC Gamecock Football, politics, and music—interests that would remain with him throughout his life.
Butch was a man of strong opinions and a sharp mind, always ready to engage in a lively debate. His enthusiasm for knowledge and spirited discussions left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He had a way of bringing people together, whether it was through shared interests or a friendly challenge of ideas.
He is preceded in death by his father, Roy Mclaughlin; his daughter, Barbara Mclaughlin; his grandson, Carson Mclaughlin; and his grandmother, Ola Ostrander. Their memories remained close to his heart, and he now joins them in eternal peace.
Butch is survived by a loving family who will forever hold him in their hearts. His mother, Delores Cottrell, and stepfather, David Cottrell, provided him with unwavering support and love. His children, Stephanie (Chubby) Kennedy, Ashley Mclaughlin, Christopher (Michele) Mclaughlin, and Sarah Mclaughlin, were the pride of his life, and he cherished every moment with them. His siblings, Donna (Zaldy) Boco and Stephen (Amy) Mclaughlin, shared a bond that transcended time and distance. Also many nieces and nephews!
Butch’s legacy lives on through his grandchildren—Anthony, Dana, Macie, Dannion, Ariyonna, JaDarius, Dominic, Tatiana, Anna, Gabriella, D’Anthony, Adrian, and Allie—who brought immense joy to his life. He was also blessed with ten great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his love and spirit.
A Memorial service to honor and celebrate Butch’s life will be held on October 17, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Southland Memorial Gardens Chapel of Hope, 700 W. Dunbar Rd, West Columbia, SC. Family, friends, and all whose lives Butch touched are invited to come together in remembrance and gratitude for the time they shared with him.
In this moment of farewell, the family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the MICU department at Lexington Medical Center and to Lauren of Sharing Hope for their compassionate care and support during Butch’s final days.
While Butch has departed from this world, his legacy of love, laughter, and engaging debates will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. May we find comfort in the memories we created together and the love that will never fade.
