Eudora Nell Hawkins went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, November 20, 2014. She was 90 years old.
She is survived by her daughter; Linda Nell Bray and her grandsons; Scott Brown and Jeff Brown and his wife, Ashley. She is also survived by her sister; Virginia Jantz and 5 great grandchildren; Jacob, Ethan, Trey, Kinsleigh and Wyatt Brown.
Mrs. Hawkins whose maiden name is Copeland was born in Waco and she spent her entire life here. Her parents ran a small grocery store in downtown Waco. Much of her childhood was spent on a small farm near Hog Creek with her sister; Virginia Copeland Jantz and brother; William Copeland. She later married Mr. Jack Hawkins and they settled in Waco after Mr. Hawkins completed his 20 year career in the military – serving proudly in the Second World War. Mrs. Hawkins, or Nell for all who knew her, was a homemaker. She worked outside the home only briefly as her young marriage began. Thereafter, she was devoted to home and her family. Nell was lovely in every way. She was an accomplished seamstress, painter and she could make a world class coconut cream pie. Nell loved the outdoors, gardening and spending the day on the golf course with family. But it is her dedication to family and her selflessness that will be most remembered; she never put her needs first. These qualities are what drove her. And for her, they were effortless. Her attitude toward life was spirited and optimistic. She was part of the greatest generation, and she was the embodiment of its “can do spirit”. No one who knew her can forget how quick she was to laugh and enjoy the simple pleasures of family, friends and home. These same qualities severed her well through a devastating illness at the end of her life. She handled an incredibly difficult two years with profound grace and strength. Her character and attitude inspired everyone who was privileged to spend time with her at the close of her life.
Our family will be eternally grateful to Peter and Lucy Lupu of Lucy’s Loving Home. The love and care shown to Nell from Peter, Lucy and the entire Lupu family was wonderful.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM on Tuesday, November 25th at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be at 1:30 PM with Chaplain Irena Viajnic officiating. Interment will follow in Waco Memorial Park
