John was born on January 12, 1925 to David and Maude Hagler Fowler in the town of Buckholts, Bell County, Texas. He believed in Christ as his Savior. He was raised near Buckholts, TX by his cotton farming father, Dave and hardworking and loving mother, Maude, who attended and were members of Friendship Methodist Church.
He joined the Navy after graduating from San Gabriel High School in Sharp, Texas and later retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1963.
His surviving three children: Valerie of Waco, Dave of Palo Alto, CA, and Brian of Boerne, TX; were raised while the family lived in Robinson, TX. While living in Robinson John enjoyed Bar-B-Qing, a cold beer and a chew of tobacco, which he always was willing to share! He enjoyed getting outside and kept the lawn and trees and garden in great shape. He loved baseball and coached various Little League teams in Robinson.
John liked reading Time magazine cover to cover and kept up with current events to keep his mind sharp. He was always willing to engage in a good natured debate. John had a great memory and we were always amazed how well he could remember the past and relatives in particular, which helped us all appreciate our Texas heritage.
He worked at the VA Regional Office in Waco, TX for many years and retired from Government Service in 1990. His years of retirement were spent in the company of his beloved wife of 60 years, Henrietta, and with his many grandchildren and great grandchildren who adorned him.
His last years were plagued with diminishing health, but never did he complain about his plot in life. He died without bitterness and will forever rest in the peacefulness of his Father’s kingdom. He will be sorely missed.
The battle fought, the victory won. Enter thy Master’s joy
