Mattie Bell Johnston

Mattie B. Johnston, 89, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2016. Funeral services will be held at The Salvation Army Church in Waco on Friday, May 13 at 10:00 a.m. with Major Bradley Caldwell and Major John Tolen officiating. Interment will follow at Waco Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 12 at Connally-Compton Funeral Directors.

Mattie was born on July 8, 1926 in Margaret, Texas to J.B. Laseter and Vista Laster. She worked almost her entire life as a manager at The Salvation Army until she retired in 1992. Mattie was a faithful member of The Salvation Army Church. Along with being a proud member and participant of the women’s club and prayer study group, Mattie also enjoyed cooking and crocheting. She loved taking good care of her beloved four legged companion, “Rhea”, may she rest in peace. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family. Mattie will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 45 years, Sam “Luke” Johnston in 1992; and 4 brothers and sisters.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her son, James Johnston and wife, Patty, of Seattle, Washington, son, Sam Johnston Jr., and wife, Sherri, of Temple, Texas, daughter, Cathy Johnston Garcia and husband, Steve of Santa Fe, Texas, son, Leslie Johnston and wife, Amanda of West, Texas; nephew, John Tolan and wife, Jackie of Dallas, Texas; and 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ray Harrison, John Branscum, Jimmy Johnston, Steven Garcia, James Stead and Tori Wenman.
