Aloha my bradda, see you again one day,

When I was in grade school, you were already working to help mama. You would come home from work, empty your pockets of coins in your dresser drawer. Oh, music to my ears. I would take a quarter, walk all the way up to Mukai store in Haiku and buy candy. That quarter went a long way back in those days and of course you knew what I was doing.

My favorite memory….

When I attended St. Anthony Girls High School, brother Henry worked at Maui Palms so we both would come downtown with one car.  I would drop him off at the hotel then I would go to school.  After school I would pick him up and we would head home.  He always wanted me to drive as he relaxed in the passenger seat.  More than once when we just passed Hookipa park and before we got to Maliko gulch he would take off his stinky socks and throw them out the window!!  Then he would laugh out loud.

Jr’s Bike

Jr, about 20 years old, a single desk clerk at Maui Palms, owned a motorcycle that he loved dearly. One day, Carol and I couldn't resist the temptation to take it for a spin while Jr was at work. Carol drove, and I rode on the back as we zoomed towards Haiku store. Unfortunately, we underestimated a curve and skidded on loose gravel, causing the bike to fall on its left side.

We ended up with some nasty scrapes and scratches on our arms and thighs. The wounds bled and were quite painful. Carol had similar injuries. Surprisingly, the bike remained unharmed except for a few dirt marks on the handle grips. After getting it home, we carefully returned it to its original spot, cleaned it, and tended to our wounds.

Later that night, when Jr  joined us in the living room, I tried to hide my arm injuries. But, alas, I slipped up and revealed the scrapes. Junior immediately noticed and exclaimed, 
"WHAT HAPPENED TO MY BIKE!!

Sure, when Junior found out, he was initially upset, but over time, he started telling the story affectionately, caring more about our well-being than the bike. He became a supportive figure in our lives, like a father.


Canary Meaning and Messages

Aloha Bradda

It was a warm and radiant Saturday morning, June 3rd, 2023, our family gathered off the shores of Maui,  to bid farewell and scatter the ashes of our beloved Henry "Jr." Rosa.

Lou Ann, Jr.'s wife, chose to observe the ceremony from a lookout point on the shore, while Rhonda, Jr.'s daughter, took on the responsibility of fulfilling her father's final wishes.

We boarded a friend's boat and set off from Maalaea harbor, aiming to a suitable spot near the shoreline that would allow Lou Ann to participate in the ceremony. As we gently scattered Jr.'s ashes into the water, a sense of calmness filled the air, and his ashes gently floated with the current then found their place beneath the surface.

In keeping with Hawaiian tradition and as a heartfeplt tribute to Jr.'s memory, we tossed plumeria flowers into the ocean. Two baby white mahi mahi gracefully swam up, biting on to the stems of the plumerias, dragging them down into the depths of the ocean. It felt as though they were divinely entrusted with this solemn duty.

Jr’s favorite Hawaiian music played in the background, enhancing the ambiance of the moment. Just as the fish swam away, Mama's favorite song, "Imi Au la 'oe," began to play, evoking cherished memories and seemingly carrying Mama's spirit within its melodies.

Suddenly a helicopter appeared, showering the boat with an abundance of plumeria flowers. It then circled the boat three times, signifying the cycle of life, inviting us to reflect upon our own lives. Finally it swiftly sliced through the center of the circle, serving as a gentle reminder to embrace the present moment.

In turn, the boat mimicked the helicopter’s path swirling in a counterclockwise motion around the burial site symbolic of a journey back in time, allowing us to reflect upon our memories of Brother Henry. The boat then cut through the center of the circle, guiding us back to the present.

Meanwhile, at the lookout point, a red canary landed on a nearby branch, in close proximity to Lou Ann. Its presence felt significant, as if it carried a message, affirming that the extraordinary events we had witnessed were more than mere coincidences.

We found solace and made our way back to the harbor, feeling a deep sense of tranquility. The boat gently rocked, and the serenity of the ocean surrounded us, reminding us that Brother Jr.'s love and spirit would forever be intertwined with the enduring beauty and peacefulness of Maui's shores.

                     “Mahalo plenty and God bless”

I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU AND I LOVE YOU SO MUCH. I MISS OUR TALKS. CALVIN MISSES AND LOVES YOU TOO

I will miss my Uncle Henry. He was the kindest spirit and taught me what aloha truly means.  While I spent most of my life thousands of miles away from him, he always took the time to reach out and see how everyone is doing.  His smile was contagious and made everyone around him feel joy.  I treasure the times I spent with him and only wish I had one more time to say hi.

I want to add…

When our Dad passed our Mom was left with 7 children to raise.  Brother Henry was just 20 years old at the time.  He helped Mama raise us.  He was always the peacemaker.  Even after we all had our own families he would call often to see if everyone was doing okay.  I will treasure his heart and all of his voicemails.  Miss him an awful lot💜

I’m Aron Medeiros and I’m a Nursing Assistant (Unit Helper) at Hale Makua Kahului. I’m not in the same league as a CNA or Registered Nurse, as I don’t do any personal care to residents. My job was to do the little things in-between (filling waters, handing out lunches, etc.) by helping around the Ilima wing where Mr. Rosa stayed. One of my jobs was to talk to the residents, sit with them, talk with them and keep them company throughout the day. One of the residents that I had the privilege of talking to daily was Mr. Henry Rosa and my favorite part of the day was when I’d start my shift and I’d see Henry sitting outside in his chair and I’d tell him “Good morning Uncle Henry”. He’d look up from his newspaper to look straight at me and with the most enthusiastic energy and biggest smile he’d say “Hey! How you doing?”. Always the sweetest man whenever I’d come in to see him or pass him by and always had the biggest smile on his face. Through his time at Hale Makua I also got the privilege to meeting his beautiful, lovely and sweetest wife Lou Ann and daughter Rhonda. Just like Henry they were always smiling and always so kind. I didn’t know Mr. Rosa as long as I wish I had, but the time that I did have with him and looking after him is something that I’d never take back, never took for granted and just wish that I had more time with him. It was an absolute honor and blessing to have known Mr. Rosa
