Iris was always by her husband, Billy’s side. They spent many years volunteering with the Maui Special Olympics teaching the young athletes the game of softball and coached the winning bowling team that made it to the state championships. Iris and Billy were avid fundraisers for the Maui Special Olympics where they participated in Cops on Top and even ran a booth at the Maui County Fair for many years. On top of that, Iris volunteered her time doing crafts, lei making, and games with the campers at Camp Imua Fun Day at Olowalu. For 25 years, Billy and Iris ran the Ka‘aha‘ike Softball Tournament where teams from all over the state and mainland came to Maui to participate. Iris also coached Bobby Sox, Women’s Softball and paddled. She was considered the Best Women’s Steersman in her time. Her crew won many medals in the Canoe Regattas. Lastly, Iris and Billy were very active members of Nā Kiaʻi, a hui dedicated to the protection of Mauna Kea where they met daily for ʻaha.
If you knew Iris, she always thought of others before herself. She would gather the Cabacungan family to prepare and serve meals to those less fortunate through Good Shephard Church in Wailuku. Iris was always there for everyone and her home was always open to anyone in need. She had the biggest heart and was known to be the protector of the family.
We want to give a special mahalo to Dr. Pollick and nurses at Kaiser, Apria Healthcare, Gammie Homecare, and Hospice Maui for their continuous care and support. Iris was loved and will be truly missed by all who knew h her. Billy Boy and Kahea send their aloha and mahalo to all those who have impacted h her life. Me ke aloha nui, the Kaluakini and Cabacungan ʻohana.
Services will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at St. Anthony Church in Wailuku. Visitations begin at 8:30AM with mass at 11:00AM.
