Winona Mabel Shim, 91, of Kula passed peacefully into her new life with The Lord on September 18, 2023. She was born on September 8, 1932, to Joaquin Moniz Tavares and Mary Joao. She is survived by children Geraldine (Shim) Lund (Washington), Gerard Sherman Shim (Kula) and Patricia (Shim) Franquez (Oahu), 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.Winona is predeceased by her parents, 4 siblings, and her husband Lawrence whom she was married to for 68 years. Her lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ created a deep love and bond that continued into her married life and in raising her family through her faith. She was a parishioner of Kula Catholic Community for over 60 years, and as a Eucharistic Minister she served communion to the home bound and those in the hospital alongside her husband Lawrence for many years.Winona was a peace maker and giver. She touched countless lives during her time with us.She always had a guitar/ukulele in hand and shared her love for music with the homebound and the patients at the hospital, and any family event that was attended over the years. The house was always filled with music at the end of night when she would pick up the guitar and start singing the old songs that she learned growing up. Her talents and contributions extended to many areas of her life. She loved to sew, knit and crochet, and for years crocheted beanies for newborns in the hospital. She was an avid gardener, had a green thumb which was reflected in her ‘Mother Mary’ garden. She grew a variety of flowers, vivid with colors, and was a sight to behold for many decades. Her career in retail went as far back to the Ritz at the old Ala Moana Center on Oahu. Returning to Maui, she worked at Woolworth at the Maui Mall, and then to Liberty House at Kaahumanu Center. She was a sociable person, and she thoroughly enjoyed this profession by helping new people and old friends that came through the store. She cherished every friendship that her profession offered. As she would always say to Us … “It’s All Good”. We will not forget, and now she joins our Dad in eternal life with God. A hui hou, Mom – Until we all meet again. Please join us in celebration at the Holy Ghost Church in Kula on Friday November 3, 2023, from 9am to 10:45am. Mass to follow. Burial will follow at the Makawao Cemetery. Aloha Attire.
