

Raymond was born on December 12, 1926, in Clinton, South Carolina, to Collier and Janie (Johnson) Pettis. On October 25, 1952, he married Marian Elizabeth Jackson and they raised two daughters. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Columbia, South Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II from April 1945 to December 1946. Raymond worked as a civilian for the Federal Government from December 1946 until his retirement in July 1987. Early in his career, he worked for the Department of the Navy and the U.S. Postal Service. He worked the majority of his career as a budget analyst and a financial manager, and he retired as the Director, Resource Management for the Adjutant General, Department of the Army.
In addition to his career, he enjoyed reading, listening to classical music, gardening, and playing golf. He was always interested in and enjoyed learning new things. He was a “Mr. Fix It” around the house, and he would tackle carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical jobs without hesitation.
His loving wife of almost 68 years preceded him in death in March 2020. As the youngest of nine siblings, Raymond was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers (Collier and Julian), and six sisters (Lucile, Elise, Geneva, Inez, Helen, and Frances). He is survived by his daughters Renee and Sharon; grandchildren Travis, Lauren, and Adam, Jr.; and great-grandaughters Lily and Taylor and great-grandson Travis, Jr.
A private service will be held to honor and celebrate Raymond's life.
