Alvin was born June 17, 1939 in Roseville, Michigan. He was a son of Paul and Lucille (nee Toegel) Zeckzer. On September 15, 1962, he married Cathryn (nee Barclay) at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Detroit, MI. Alvin was employed at Michigan Bell Telephone Company until retiring after 33 years of dedicated work.
He was a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Eastpointe and participated in many organizations, such as AAL (Thrivent), Lamplighters, Boy Scouts, and helped with the Youth Group. He also was a member of the Lutheran High School East Booster Club. You could also see him in the kitchen at church flipping pancakes for the many pancake breakfasts AAL hosted. He liked camping with his family and traveled to many of the states. He joined Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warren in his later years and enjoyed going out to dinner with his church friends. He also enjoyed dining out with the “Tuesday Night” group in which they enjoyed eating in many different local restaurants. The one place that he loved spending time at was the family home in Gaylord, MI. He was able to relax and go fishing with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting with his brothers in Gladwin, MI. He enjoyed watching old westerns and listening to old time radio shows. He enjoyed watching cooking shows on PBS. He told many “Dad jokes” and touched many with his dry sense of humor. Alvin was known for his handlebar moustache. He was a family man, and was very proud of his children and grandchildren, all of them maturing into fine Christians. He will forever be loved and missed.
Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Cathryn, a son Scott (Deb) and their children Bethany, Caleb, Nathan and Micah of New Haven, IN, a daughter Susan (James) and their children Alex, Brian and Christopher of Sterling Heights, MI. Also surviving are two brothers; Ronald (Alice) of Chesterfield, MI and Clayton (Dottie) of Englewood, FL, and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family would also like to personally thank Pomeroy Nursing Facility staff for their wonderful care that they provided to Alvin. Also, they would like to thank Season’s Hospice for all their outstanding services and support.
