Archie L. Coffman, age 88 of Warren, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Macomb Center in Warren, Michigan. Archie was born August 21, 1921 in Detroit, the son of the late Archie Sr. and the late Fannie (nee: Hutcheson) Coffman. We pay homage to Archie for the part he played in service to our country during World War II. A pilot in the Army Air Corps, he was very proud of the 35 missions he flew in the defense of freedom, and was most proud of his status as an Army veteran. An engineering graduate from the Henry Ford Trade School, Archie put his knowledge & skills to work with the Ford Motor Company, where he went on to extend 55 years of dedicated service until his retirement. Archie was a man with a strong and devout faith. His decision to serve in some capacity within the church was realized through his ministry as a longtime lector at St. Jude Catholic Church in Detroit. He was also a sporting man and enjoyed the years he spent with fellow competitors at the bowling alley or on the golf course. He was a member of numerous bowling leagues over the years, and did his best to "tame the turf" on the links. But of all the things that could define Archie, perhaps the most important was how much of a "people person" he was. He truly loved spending time with family and friends and experiencing the moments that were the bedrock of the wonderful memories that many will hold from this day forward. And perhaps one of the greatest compliments paid to this personable guy is, "he was the brightest light in any room." Beloved husband of Patricia. Loving father of Cindy (Ed) Cohen, John (Cathy), Mary Lavery-Flynn (Mike), Archie (Herta), David, and Patti (Jim) Mencotti. Dear grandfather of Michael M., Melissa, John, Gina, Daniel, Becky, Andrew, Jennifer, Christina, Michael C., Stacey, Jimmy, and great-grandfather of Conner, Collin, Tali, Corey, Dana, Mackenzie, Gabriel, Matthew, Zachary, Logan, Abigail, Jackson, Erica Grace, Seth, and Sara. Brother of Helen Baaso and Edith (Richard) Schoenberg. He is predeceased by his siblings, Hannah, Oliver, and Gordon. Visitation for Archie will be on Friday from 3-9pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Rd) in Warren. He will lie in state on Saturday from 9:00am until the time of Mass at 9:30am at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, 31555 Hoover Road in Warren. Officiating the Mass will be Fr. Roman Pasieczny. Burial with full Military Honors will be held Monday 10:00 a.m. at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. Memorial donations are welcomed to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - Metro Detroit & Southeast Michigan Chapter, 24359 Northwestern Hwy., Suite 225, Southfield, MI 48075. Please share memories of Archie at his guest book.
