She was the cherished wife of the late Thomas “Gene” Bynum, with whom she shared over 50 wonderful years of marriage. Betty was a loving mother to Tom (Joyce Rumsey-Bynum) Bynum, Tim Bynum, and to her daughter Beth Swastek. She was a proud and devoted Grammy to Andrew Swastek, Johnathan Swastek, and Samantha (Brad) Breslin, and a loving step-grammy to Shannon Carducci. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Kennedy and Lucia, and Samara Bobcean.
Betty was the dear sister of the late Jack and Maxine, and sister-in-law to the late Joan Hudaski. She is fondly remembered by many extended family members and dear friends.
An accomplished educator, Betty attended Murray State University in Kentucky where she earned her master’s degree in elementary education. It was there, on a blind date, that she met the love of her life, Thomas. They were married on August 7, 1955, and soon after moved to Warren, Michigan, where they raised their family.
Betty began her teaching journey in her own home, starting a small schoolhouse for neighborhood children, before beginning her long and fulfilling career with the Van Dyke School System. She proudly retired after 35 years of shaping young minds.
Betty was known for her love of exercise, reading, and being treated to a good meal. After Gene's passing in 2008, she found joy in traveling the world with her close group of fellow retired teachers. However, her greatest pride and joy always remained her family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Betty’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
