He was born on December 28, 1948 in Pontiac, Michigan, son of Yvonne (nee: Phillips), and the late Robert Collingwood. With thanks & praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Donald for his service to our country during the Vietnam War era as a sailor in the United States Navy. Of the many duties he performed, his main responsibility was that of Electrician's Mate. With bravery as his breastplate and patriotism as his shield, he served with honor and loyalty and did his part in preserving the cause of freedom to a needy world. For the sacrifices made and his willingness to stand in harm's way, we extend Donald a posthumous and sincere Thank You!Donald was a hard worker and strove diligently throughout his career life to extend the highest standards of excellence and ethics. With an honest and honorable disposition, he was truly respected by his peers. Having attained the ultimate position of Senior Purchasing Agent within the arena of automotive supplies, Donald poured the best of himself into his work and in his work associations. Aside from his job. he was also noted for being quite the "Wrench"...a colloquial term for someone who is handy with tools, and Donald had a vast array of them at his disposal. Between the various types of machinery and engines he was requisitioned to repair, seeing each project to its resolve was more of an enjoyable experience than work. When he wasn't working, his three most prevalent hobbies included photography, motorized model airplaning, and bicycle racing,...the latter of which was more relevant in his younger years. But without question, his favorite pastime was spending time at the family cottage in Gladwin, Michigan. Known more affectionately as his "little piece of Heaven on Earth,"...it was Donald's welcomed escape from the concrete jungle and a refreshing getaway from the cares of the world,...especially when aboard his pontoon boat on the lake. Yet of all the traits unique to Donald, the most treasured and precious was Faith & Family. With an unwavering reverence for God and a genuine devotion for his loved ones, he leaves behind a special legacy of love,...not only for his Lord & Savior, but for the hearts & lives entrusted to him by the same. His care was true and telling as well, as evidenced through his fatherly involvement with sons, Andy and Michael. With Andy, it was through their mutual participation in the Civil War reinactments they were involved in,...and with Mike, he couldn't have been more supportive in his role as Hockey Dad. And for the past 10 years, he was blessed to know the love and care as shared with his beloved, Deborah. Though they met later in life, they shared a relationship that was as deep as if they'd been together for a lifetime. Donald touched a multitude of lives along the way and will be remembered for having a heart of gold. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.Donald was the beloved husband of Deborah L. Dearest son of Yvonne R. and the late Robert. Devoted father of Andrew G. (Michelle Kindschi), Michael R. (Megan), and step-son, Jeffrey R. Woods. Loving grandfather of Tyler; brother of Terrence L. (Janet), and Diane L. (Douglas) Price; and uncle to Sarah J. (Andrew) Murrell. Visitation for Donald will be held on Sunday, January 26th from 3-9pm at the D.S.
