

Gerald John Doherty, age 81 a longtime resident of Warren, died Sunday February 17, 2013 at Providence Hospital in Southfield Michigan.Gerald was born January 29, 1932 in Detroit Michigan the son of the late Thomas Doherty and the late Agnes (nee: Fasbender) Doherty. Gerald was raised in Detroit and graduated from Pershing High School. Following his schooling he went to work for Western Box Company, however as the Korean War intensified he was called to duty with the United States Army. Jerry was positioned with a Tank Battalion where he drove and navigated tanks during the war. Following his service to his country and honorable discharge Jerry returned to work for Western Box Company which later became Eastern Box Company. Jerry would work for over 40 years with the box company and retire as the superintendent of the plant.When Jerry was not working his family was paramount in his life. His grandchildren will remember their grandfather as the most supportive and inspiring person in their lives. In addition to attending all his grandchildren's events and school functions, Jerry loved to bowl. Jerry and his bowling team won two championships… first in 1987 and again twenty years later in 2007.Jerry also had a passion for the outdoors. He loved to fish, hunt, and travel to northern Michigan. When he was home Jerry could be found in his woodworking shop. He took great pride in making wood toys, clocks, cribs, and doll chest for his grandchildren. Using his hands and heart Jerry shaped out of wood everlasting memories for his family.Mr. Doherty is the beloved husband of the late Norma Doherty, and the dear father of Sharon Doherty, Thomas (Kristy) Doherty, and Gerald Jr. (Lisa) Doherty. He is the loving grandfather of Lauren, Erica, Kelly, Brandi, Renee, and dear brother of Phyllis and the late Russell Doherty.Visitation for Mr. Doherty will be Thursday from 5-9 pm and Friday from 2-9 pm with a 7:00 pm Rosary Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile). Mr. Doherty will lie in state Saturday 10:30 am at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. Celebrating the Funeral Liturgy will be Rev. Fr. Roman Pasieczny. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township, Michigan.
