Harry Marx Howland, Jr., age 71 of Warren, died Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the Autumn Woods Health Care Facility in Warren, Michigan. He was born June 26, 1948 in Detroit, son of the late Harry Sr. and the late Francis (nee: Zatuske) Howland.
With thanks and praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Harry for his service to our country during the Vietnam War era. Attaining the rank of Private First Class, Harry was a soldier in the U.S. Army and served from August 30, 1965 to November 15, 1968. Assigned the duties of Supply Specialist, Harry had the important task of seeing that everybody was adequately equipped for their respective missions,…and he ran a tight ship. For the sacrifices made and his willingness to stand in harm’s way for freedom’s sake, we honor Harry’s service and extend our posthumous gratitude for his esteemed pride and patriotism for America.
Assigned the duties of Millright, Harry was an integral cog in the automotive machine known as the Chrysler Corporation where he was extremely proud of the time spent in their employ. Following 35 years of dedicated and loyal service to the automotive giant, Harry finally accepted his well-deserved retirement as he embarked upon the next chapter in his life as a Golden Warrior.
Married on September 9, 1988, Harry was blessed to share his vows of holy matrimony with the light of his life, Miss Shirley. Together they shared a home, raised a beautiful boy, and grew deeper in love with each passing day.
When Harry managed to find a little “me time” in the day, he enjoyed exercising his love for the outdoors, often through his affinity with hunting and fishing. A Michigander to the core, he found great pleasure in stalking his prey and giving them a sporting chance until ultimately making the score. Whether in the woods or down at a favorite fishing hole, Harry sure enjoyed being outside. And if his hands weren’t full with fishing equipment or a rifle, you would have often found him out in the yard playing catch with his grandson, Kamren. Those were precious “Grandpa” moments that he treasured immensely.
And for as much as he was an outdoorsman, Harry was also the consummate “indoorsman” where he loved being entertained by his favorite shows and movies on television. From anything John Wayne related, to war movies and westerns, to the Animal Planet and any chance he got to see Cher, Harry’s TV hunger was always well-fed.
A stubborn, spit-fire of a man,…Harry loved hard, laughed often, and lived confidently by his unshakeable principles. His life was recently blessed by the wonderful surprise of a reunion with his brother & sister, both of whom he had not seen for over 60 years. Separated by unfortunate circumstances when they were just little kids, a family member was able to make the connection through the help of an ancestry site which opened the door for them to be reunited. This took place a couple of years ago, affording Harry and his siblings the opportunity of getting to know each other anew as adults,…a near-miracle that made a world of difference in Harry’s life.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, Harry adored his family, especially his only child, Sean. His son was the center of his world and he loved Sean with all his being.
Harry was the beloved husband of the late Shirley. Dear father of Sean (Candice) Howland. Loving grandfather of Kamren, Khloe, and Callie-Phoenix Howland. Brother of Thomas “Bobby” Parker and Jeanne “Margaret” Bouchard.
Visitation for Harry will be held Friday, March 13th from 3-9 pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd) in Warren.
His Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 14th at the funeral home.
