James Hurley Pocus
May 12, 1947 – January 1, 2025
It is with deep sorrow and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of James Hurley Pocus, beloved husband, father, great-grandfather, and friend, on January 1, 2025, at the age of 77. James was born on May 12, 1947, in Forestdale, Alabama, to Thomas Robert Pocus Sr. and Beulah Pearl (nee Mitchell) Pocus. He lived a life full of laughter, love, and joy, and his presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Jim met the love of his life, Jane Ellen LoPresto, in 1990 at a mutual friend's barbeque, and they were married on March 7, 1995. When asked how she knew Jim was the one she wanted to marry, Jane said “How could I NOT know he was the one?” Their bond was undeniable, and together they shared thirty-five years full of warmth, love, laughter, and mutual respect. Jim was a devoted husband and father, always putting his family first. He was proudest of his three children James, Sara, and Austin. Jim’s love and support were unwavering, and his kindness, thoughtfulness, and giving nature were a testament of the love he had for his family.
A man of many talents, Jim had a deep passion for music. He was an accomplished guitarist, both acoustic and electric, and a songwriter in his own way. Whether playing with his band, Home Cooking, or enjoying the sounds of Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, and The Band, music was a central part of his life. He was known for freestyling rap lyrics, often with humor and skill, and bringing joy to those around who were witness to them. His family could always count on hearing him whistle or hum throughout the house, adding a sense of peace and comfort to their days. Jim was proud of his music collection, often joking that he had the best stereo system in the neighborhood.
In addition to his musical talents, Jim loved to dance. He could often be found dancing around the house to his own beat. His zest for life was infectious, and his sense of humor never failed to bring a smile to the faces of his loved ones. His silly dad jokes were a hallmark of his personality, and he was always the first to share a laugh.
Jim was a man of many other passions. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, finding peace and spiritual connection in nature. He would often whistle to the cardinals that visited his yard, convinced that they would respond in return. He had a love for puzzles, especially crosswords and Sudoku, and took great joy in solving them. When it came to cooking, James was known for his mouthwatering barbeque, and his “daddy’s outside ribs” were a family favorite. No matter the hobby or pastime, Jim could be found with a smile on his face, simply because he was partaking in something he enjoyed.
A gifted handyman, Jim could fix almost anything. Whether it was something broken in the house or an old car in need of restoration, Jim was always there to lend a hand and get things running smoothly again. His passion for classic cars was unmatched, and he could identify a car by sight based on a single detail, something that always amazed his family.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of thirty years, Jane; his children James A. Pocus, Sara (the late David “Buck” Buckner) Blackwell, and Austin (Victoria) Pocus; his grandchildren, Heather Buckner, Dakota (Lizzy) Shark, Devin (Miranda) Arbogast, Ethan Blackwell, and Bruce (Javonne) Blackwell Jr.; his great-grandchildren Kay, Cash, Lillian, Kayden, Audrina, Stella, Jace, and Jett; the mother of his son Jimmy and daughter Sara, Arlene Pocus; his sister, Clara “Biba” Knight; and a multitude of extended family and friends. Preceded in death by his parents Thomas R. Pocus Sr. and Beulah P. Pocus; and his siblings Thomas R. “Bud” Pocus Jr., Louise Wood, Betty Bouck, MaryAnn Luna, Joseph Pocus, and Carol Vitale.
Jim’s family and friends will forever hold his memory close in their hearts. He was a devoted family man, always putting others first and bringing light and joy to their lives.
In his own words, Jim often said, “All I want are a few kind words and a smile,” and he certainly left the world with both. His humor, his love, and his presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to bring smiles to the faces of all who knew him.
Memorial Visitation for Jim will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2025 from 2:00 pm until 7:00 pm at D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, located at 30009 Hoover Road, Warren, Michigan 48093.
Memorial Service in Jim’s honor will take place at 6:30 pm on Sunday, January 12, 2025, also at the funeral home.
Rest in peace, Jim. You will always be remembered with love, laughter, and music.
