John “Jack” DuMoulin, age 88, of St. Clair Shores, MI, passed away peacefully early on Wednesday morning November 30, 2022, surrounded by his family. He had been in the loving care of his family and Hospice.
John was born in November 1934, in Illinois, the son of the late Joseph and Aila (Tuomi) DuMoulin. When he was a small child, his family moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, settling in Republic. Growing up in a small farming community John had all manner of pets, including Suzy the deer and Blackie the crow. He joined the United States Navy and proudly served from 1953 until 1957 aboard the USS Libra as a Midshipman’s Mate First Class and in the Shore Patrol. He completed several tours in the Mediterranean.
John met his beloved wife, Marylyn “Butchie” when he was at home on leave from the Navy and they married shortly after he was discharged from the service. They briefly lived in Marquette and then moved downstate to Detroit, where his service to his country and community didn't end after his honorable discharge.
John continued his career of service by attending the Police Academy and becoming a Detroit Police Officer, spending 26 years on the force and earning the rank of Sergeant. John loved working with his hands and always had side jobs working as a finished carpenter, doing tile installations, indoor painting, and renovations. After retiring from the police force, John worked security at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit and at Joe Louis Arena for the Detroit Red Wings.
The most important thing in John’s life was his family. He loved spending time with them whenever possible. If you needed something fixed or a problem solved, even better! During the summertime, John always manned the barbeque - cooking up delicious burgers, chicken, and steaks. His marinade of choice was a little Pabst Blue Ribbon splashed on top of whatever was cooking.
John loved to spend time outdoors fishing and hunting. He and his wife spent many happy hours in their boat on Lake St. Clair fishing for perch and walleye. As for hunting, John occasionally hunted for small game like rabbit and pheasant, with his trusty Irish Setter Shawn at his side. His favorite game was white-tailed deer. He happily spent hours in the woods with his son and grandson waiting for the right buck to come along.
John had a passion for working with wood and creating beautiful furniture. He would carefully draw up his designs, including minute details such as the grain of the wood and an occasional knot. If you asked nicely, he would gladly make something for you in his workshop.
Survivors include his children - Linda (Mark), Gary (Sheryl), and Yvonne (Jerome), grandchildren – Jeffrey (Johanna), Alex, and Andrea (Colby), great grandson Adam, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Marylyn “Butchie,” 3 brothers – Martin Korpi, Joseph DuMoulin, and James DuMoulin, and 4 sisters – Joanne LaFreniere, Jenona Ritchey, Jeanette Collins and Jean Schroeder.
