John Thomas Jeno, age 93, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2022 at McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mount Clemens. He was born on June 9, 1929 in Hamtramck. John was the son of the late Andrew and the late Anna (nee Pruzinsky) Jeno.
John met a young lady by the name of Dorothy square dancing at the YMCA. That meeting turned into a long-term relationship and, before long, a proposal. Their love endured years apart while John served in the Korean War stationed in Japan and continued to blossom by writing love letters to each other until John returned.
It was February 6, 1954, at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Detroit that John and Dorothy shared their vows and promised to love, honor, and cherish each other. That is exactly what they did for 61 years. Together, they built a home, raised three beautiful children, and grew deeper in love with each passing day.
John was deeply devoted to his wife Dorothy. The two shared every moment together including their favorite hobbies of eating out each day and spending time with family and friends. John never left Dorothy’s side. They set a wonderful example of a long, loving marriage for all that knew them.
Those that knew John best would describe him as a selfless man, who would do anything for anyone. He worked hard to provide for his family and to contribute positively to his community. After retiring from 28 years of service at Cadillac as a Process Engineer, John focused the next chapter of his life on pursuing his passion of caring for others. John could always be found helping a neighbor, a family member or friend in need, or volunteering his time in his community. John ensured everyone around him was taken care of, and in return he was blessed with a long life filled with many friends (and the occasional tasty baked good).
John and Dorothy’s greatest love was for their children. He enjoyed sailing with his son Mike and daughter-in-law Mary Ann, attending band concerts his daughter Karen played in, spending time by the water with his daughter Sharon and son-in-law Eric watching freighters go by, and sharing his love of cars with his son-in-law Ric. John and Dorothy also shared a love for travel. They enjoyed Alaskan cruises, a trip to Hawaii, and casino bus trips. John’s favorite hobbies included reading books, taking photos and videos, doing income taxes, and hosting holidays with his family.
Some of John’s children’s favorite childhood memories included family camping trips and spending Sunday afternoons at the museum or library. He was the most caring father and his children always knew how much they were loved. Later in life, John loved sharing stories about his childhood with his children.
Among his greatest joys was spending time with his grandkids. Along with Dorothy, they could be found at any one of their grandkids many activities; from school events, sailing regattas, cheerleading competitions, or just a weekend movie and lunch. John truly loved seeing his grandkids grow and was an extremely large part of their lives. He was further blessed by great-grandchildren late in his life who affectionally referred to him as “Old Papa”. Old Papa loved watching the kids play and never missed an opportunity to capture the moment with a cellphone photo or video.
John also found love and companionship from his cat Jade, who has been a part of his home for the past 19 years.
John’s story is one of a kind, gentle, and caring man. This kindness was passed on to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His silly grin will be remembered by all that loved and knew him.
