John Harry Portalski, age 90 of Warren, died Thursday, November 7, 2013 in Warren, Michigan. John was born on May 10, 1923 in Detroit, son of the late Peter and Rose (nee: Szacinska) Portalski. With thanks & praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to John for his service to our country during World War II. Inducted into the U.S. Army on March 15, 1943, he was part of Company B, 29th Battalion and held the position of Rifle Instructor until his separation on February 9, 1946. John attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was decorated for his duties overseas in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations. For the call to duty he so proudly served, we honor John for his bravery and patriotism, and for the part he played in helping to preserve the freedoms and liberties we enjoy today...because he was there! John was married to the love of his life, Ruth, with whom he raised two beautiful children, John Jr. and Jenny. Spending time with his children and grandchildren is what gave John more enjoyment than anything else in life. In his free time, John was quite the sports enthusiast.. Always in tune with what was happening on the local scene, there was no greater supporter of the Detroit Tigers, Lions, Red Wings, and Pistons (especially during the Pistons championships) than John. John also enjoyed gardening and manicuring his lawn, particularly when Ruth was sharing the task. He enjoyed reading, with some of his favorite pleasures being science fiction stories and keeping up with current events in Time Magazine. Another favorite of John's was listening to music and watching the Lawrence Welk Show. John Harry Portalski is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth. He is the dear father of John (Jeanne) and Jane (Andrew) Portalski.
