Lawrence Patrick Walker, “Pat,” age 81 of Warren, died Saturday, May 2, 2020 at home in the company of his loved ones. He was born April 14, 1939 in Warren, son of the late Timothy and the late Edith (nee: Darling) Walker.
An old adage states, “when you find a job you love, you never work a day in your life.” Though Pat (as he was most widely known to all) was a hard worker and dedicated to his job, this old adage certainly personified the many years he devoted to the City of Warren as a member of their Water Department. Often seen manhandling his backhoe, watching Pat maneuver that machine was like watching an artist with a paintbrush. He loved working for the city, enjoyed the camaraderie he shared amongst his work mates, and reaped immense reward in seeing each job to its completion. Pat’s loyalty and dedication will be sorely missed.
When Pat wasn’t at work, it certainly didn’t mean he was lying idle. If you didn’t find him tinkering around at home, you might have found him out & about, scouring the neighborhood for a bit of his precious scrap metal. A scrap metal collector for many years, Pat had an eye for the items of value and didn’t waste any time snatching it up. But even more special than that was his love for fishing. Considered one of the more “quiet” sports, Pat found great pleasure in having his angling mastery tested,…but even greater pleasure in filling his pail with evidence of just how great a fisherman everyone knew him to be. Perhaps even more notable was how he took his fishing aspirations to an entirely different level. Once a year…for two enjoyable weeks…over 35 years, Pat had created a beautiful tradition of loading up the car and heading to an ideal fishing locale in Longlac, Ontario, Canada. Nestled on the northern coast of Longlac Bay,…just about mid-way between Lake Superior and Hudson Bay,…Pat had somehow unearthed the treasure of casting his line in the “lake of plenty!” It was a long way to go, but well worth the trip,…and the memories made along the way.
Pat was known for being quite the character. He had a wonderful and unique sense of humor, and he loved to be the one sparking laughter and joy amongst his family and friends. He loved telling a good joke and bringing a smile to people’s faces. Even when life slowed him down, he wasn’t content to become a couch potato. To be sure, he still enjoyed sitting,…but Pat chose his front yard as opposed to sitting in front of the TV. He had become a fixture in his neighborhood as he perched himself out on the front yard, engaging others as they happened by, and keeping an eye on all the comings & goings in the area. But though his presence is gone, his spirit is sure to remain to assure his neighborhood friends that he still has their back,…just from a bit loftier perch.
Pat’s heart was embodied in the love of family, especially when it came to his most treasured cherubs,…his beloved grandchildren. They were the light of his life, and infused him with a youthfulness that made each moment in their company something special. His children love to boast about the fact that he never missed a graduation,…and Pat was blessed with 25 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren. He was quite the phenomenal Grandpa!
A loving husband, father and grandfather, Pat leaves behind a storehouse of wonderful memories to be embraced by those who were fortunate to know him. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.
Pat was the beloved husband of Linda. Dear father of Peggy (William) Angel, Tammy Walker, Larry (Candy) Walker, Dale (Shirley) Walker, Patty (Art Stadler) Walker, and the late Mary Harris. Loving grandfather of Christopher (Jenny), Kimmy (Jeremy), Brandy, Colton, Andrew, April, James (Karen), Benjamin (Ashley), Anthony (Mary), Brandon, Tiffany, Jeremy, Jessica, Travis, Cheyenne, Kayla, Dakota, Ally, Conner, Justen, Alexis, Jacob, Sean, Brian, Breann, and great-grandfather of 45,…with one on the way. Brother of Gene (the late Betty) Darling, Mike (Ginger) Walker, Judy (Denny) McKenzie, Charlotte (the late Dan) Edgley, Joan Thornsbury, Tom (the late Shirley) Walker, the late Jim Walker, and the late Richard Walker.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home in Warren, Michigan.
