Leah Mae Bonsky, age 89 of Warren, passed peacefully at home on February 6, 2021 surrounded by her loved ones. She was born October 20, 1931 in Owosso, Michigan, daughter of the late George Howard and the late Carol Laverne (nee: Vosburg) Atherton.
Leah was quite a lady. Saddened by the loss of her dear husband when she was just 42 years old, still....Leah pressed on in caring for her family, running a home, and raising her seven children,...yet also found time to work outside of the house for the L’Anse Creuse School System. She was proud to have worked her way up the ladder, ultimately retiring as a bookkeeper. Leah was dedicated to her work, organized in the many details of her job, and loved being surrounded by all the kids. The youthfulness of their spirits was like a special perk of her employment.
When she wasn’t working, perhaps her favorite pastime was the fun and entertainment found in the game of bowling. A sport Leah discovered early in life, she carried the pleasure of taming the lanes right through to the age of 88. Not only did it provide the perfect blend of sport & friendship, but it held a special prominence as it afforded her the chance to meet the man who would sweep her off her feet, the dashing Stanley Bonsky. As if she wasn’t already having loads of fun up to that point, now she had a life-long partner to share it with as well. Yet Leah’s sporting pleasures went beyond the game of bowling as she was also quite the fan of her hometown heroes, the Detroit Tigers & Red Wings. Both possessing their own appeal, Leah was always their greatest fan and avid supporter. If it entailed “Sports in the D”, it was definitely for She!
Leah will also be remembered for her love of travel, especially when it came to those impromptu road trips. You know,…the kind where the joy and excitement of simply getting away fills your spirit with wild abandon,…the kind where some of life’s most precious moments are created and coveted. The destination didn’t always matter,…it was more about the freedom of the here & now. Many may also recall that Leah was an avid reader, her favorite book being the time-honored, “Little Women.” No matter the book, there was simply a sweet release in finding a cozy nook and some quiet time, then allowing herself to get lost in the pages. Those were always such precious moments for her.
Like most Mom’s and Grandma’s out there, Leah shared their same passion for babies,…holding them, caressing them, squeezing their little cheeks, and getting swept away by their innocence. Any time Leah was given the opportunity of lovin’ on a little one, she was All Arms!
But of course, the greatest portion of her love was that poured out to her precious family, and the extended Bonsky Bunch. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Leah impacted the hearts and souls of all her cherubs and leaves a legacy of love that will live on with each remembrance shared. She will be missed beyond expression and loved beyond measure.
Leah was the beloved wife of the late Stanley. Dearest mother of Ben Howard Bonsky, Bonnie Lee Frank, Barbara Jean VanDoeselaar, Becky Marie Castaldo, William Stanley Bonsky, Brenda Susan D’Agostino, and Beth Evelyn Thacker. Sister of the late Lois Marie Schrader and Donald Ray Atherton. Also survived by too too many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Leah will be held Thursday, February 11th from 3-9 pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd.) in Warren, Michigan.
Her Committal Service will take place on Friday, 1:00 pm at Utica Cemetery, 46325 Shelby Road in Shelby Township, Michigan.
